Great fielders in each fielding position

It is criminal to not have Rahul Dravid at slips. He's the record holder for the highest number of catches in slip.

Rest, I believe we could work a field with Suresh Raina, Michael Clarke, Jonty Rhodes, Gibbs and AB.

I also find that Lara is generally under rated as well. In his prime he was peeeless at first.
Everton Weekes in his day was supposed the best as well. Not too many mentions for Tony Grieg either.

No mention of Brian McMillan...wow...The "BUCKET" was one of the best slip fielder ever seen..I have never seen the "bucket" spill anything ...90 SA-ans were an awesome fielding team..

Totally agree. Mark pulled off some great ones, but then would put down the easiest sitters. From what little I saw of Greg Chappell he was the better player at second slip.
But when they were good they were so good. Watching Jnr catch a classic was as good as it gets on a cricket field. There have been a few elegant batsmen over the time, but only MEW managed to be an elegant fieldsman as well. He and then Ponting are by some distance my two favourite fieldsmen.

Keith Miller definitely needs a mention, ultra safe hands, plus capable of producing miracles in the slips. Neil Harvey for the best fielder to prowl the covers, too.

Ah now you're taking me back to the England sides of my youth - Botham and Hendrick in the slips, Gower and Randall in the covers, Knott or Taylor behind the sticks, Willis a much under-rated gully, Greig and Roope close in, even Boycs a safe pair of hands at long-leg or mid-on - might have the edge over the current side actually.
I would dispute that.

Boycott had a reasonably safe pair of hands but was hardly likely to take a big diving catch. He was also pretty slow around the ground.

Willis was not fielding in the gully at all by 1977 (or quite a time before) - his knees wouldn't take it. He would lumber around the outfield and stick out a boot to stop the ball.

I would agree about the keepers (Taylor is the best I've seen - just ahead of Knott) and Old was another good close catcher but todays team, taken as an XI is comfortably better.

For the general thread - nobody has mentioned Gilbert Jessop (McClaren wanted him in 1902 because he saved so many runs at cover and was always likely to get a run out), Walter Hammond (outstanding anywhere but exceptional at slip) and Learie Constantine (Neville Cardus once suggested that he should have first claim on any ball hit in the air when he was fielding).

Regarding Michael Holding - I seem to recall when Holding first came to England it was said that he'd grown up in Jamaica with a friend who was also a fine sportsman. Holding was considered the better track athlete (I'd suspect 400m) while the friend was the superior cricket talent. We know about Holding but I believe the friend ran in the Olympics.

My fielding stars team:

Hobbs (covers)
Bob Simpson (slip)
Hammond (slips - anywhere)
Bland (covers)
Randall (covers - best I've personally seen)
Wlifred Rhodes (mid off - at a time c1900 when it was a key position)
Constantine (anywhere)
Richie Benaud (gully - good call whoever made that one)
Bob Taylor (gloveman)
Holding (outfield - mid on)
James Anderson (slips - anywhere)

Symonds is the best outfielder that I have seen - bigger, faster and with a more powerful throw than Ponting or Rhodes

Go back a page and you will find him in my slip cordon!

You serious? I saw him grassing several dollies, same goes for Mark Waugh. He dropped plenty of easy catches.

They both looked classy while taking those slip catches so memory keeps such good catches in our minds. I used to love each of Brian Young's slip catches as well...
Absolutely, of course he may have grassed a few in his time but who hasn't. I watched him play for years in County Cricket as well as England and he rarely missed a thing.

I remember Hick as a 50 percenter - massively over-rated.

Keeper - Knott
First slip - Strauss
Second slip - Botham/Flintoff
Third Slip - Anderson

Gully - ?

Cover point - Collingwood (for catches, couldn't hit the stumps on runouts for toffee)
Extra Cover - Gower
Short Leg - Bell (especially to spinners)
Fine Leg - Trott :D (he's a specialist, don't you know)

Mid on - Alistair Cook (specialist ball shiner)
Far better Slipper than Strauss, who I used to rate but in the past 18 months has shelled a fair few dollies, it's coincided funnily enough with his poor batting form.

It always does. Batting and slip catching both rely on reflexes and hand eye cordination. If you are struggling in one, chances are you will struggle in the other.

Mark Waugh deteriorated a little in his last couple of years, but he was excellent for a very, very long time.

I know this bloke is from South Africa, which is a country nobody but kinkkallis seems to know, but Brian McMillan was a gun at first slip - up there with the best. Hands like toilet lids ....:D

Herschelle Gibbs at gully or backward point is another consideration I'd like to throw in.
