Wes Hall becomes Sir Wes Hall

The Barbados-born fast bowler, who played 48 Tests for West Indies from 1958 to 1969, is remembered for his role in the famous tied Test of 1960 against Australia in Brisbane. Hall claimed nine wickets in that match and bowled the final over with Australia needing six runs for victory. Three wickets fell in Hall's over, including two run-outs, and the match was tied.

After retirement, Hall served as West Indies manager and selector and was president of the West Indies Cricket Board from 2001 to 2003. He was also a minister of tourism and sport in the Barbados government, and is an ordained church minister.

"There are few in West Indies cricket who could be more deserving of such an illustrious honour as Wes Hall," Julian Hunte, the WICB president, said. "Wes has been a true and unwavering servant of cricket, who fought for equality for West Indies on and off the field.

"He laboured for our game and our people because of his love for cricket and West Indians, and so diverse are his talents and skills that he has also served Barbados and the region in politics, religion and as a widely acclaimed and ever-popular speaker."
Joins the likes of Hobbs, Hutton, Bradman, Walcott, Weekes, Worrell, Richards, Hadlee, Sobers, Botham, Allen, Constantine, Cowdrey, Bedser, Warner, Hunte, Jackson and co. as knighted cricketers. Quite an elite list, really.

Thoroughly deserved - was a great player, and has served the game marvelously over the years.

I don't want Imran to be knighted. I don't want him to be recognised by a title that doesn't mean anything.

What do you mean it doesn't mean anything? Doesn't every country have its own Honours system?

We used to have knighthoods here but they were rightly dispensed with during the magnificent reformist era of the Hawke-Keating government in the 1980s. Now we have the Order of Australia.*

But to those whose countries still have them, why is a knighthood meaningless? Doesn't it acknowledge your contribution?

NZ did something very similar, but recently brought back using the epithet "Sir" to denote those who've received the appropriate level of the NZ Order of Merit.

From Wikipedia:

"In 2009, Prime Minister John Key restored the honours to their pre-April 2000 state. Principal Companions and Distinguished Companions (85 people in total) were given the option to convert their awards into Knighthoods or Damehoods.[14] The restoration was welcomed by the Monarchist League of New Zealand.[15] The option has been taken up by 72 of those affected, including rugby great Colin Meads.[16] Former Labour MP Margaret Shields was one of those who accepted a Damehood, despite receiving a letter from former Prime Minister Helen Clark "setting out why Labour had abolished the titles and saying she hoped she would not accept one"."
