Strauss and England playing the long game here - lulling them into a false sense of security
I suppose we usually start abysmally against SA at home, and then hope we get lucky enough to turn the series around in the last couple of tests. Perhaps not the smartest strategy in a three test series.

You MUST be joking! Trott and Cook are much more aesthetically pleasing batsman than that leg-side dominated crab-like Smith.
As a neutral, I find Cook impressive to watch. Trott is infuriating. Smith's technique is aesthetically appalling

Not neutral but you sum it up perfectly there. Trott annoys me with some of his antics scratching at the crease etc so god knows how annoying that must be to a fan of another side.

Cook perhaps, but Trott's a fair smoother, more orthodox player. Has a cover drive, for one.

Ug, leg side half volley. Has a four, Jacques, old son.
Trott definitely has the Smithean tendency to work anything on off stump towards midwicket, which I find ungainly when it's done as a process. But yeah, when he decides to actually bother with the off side, his shots through cover are definitely a lot more classical and aesthetically pleasing than Smith's.

I find Smith hilarious.

His technique is unco, it doesn't work against Chris Martin, but smokes everyone else, especially England. What a hero.
