New feature - There but for the Grace of God

110 years ago Fred Tate failed to hold a catch on which the loss of the Ashes was blamed. CW's Dave Wilson looks into the story behind what has come to be known as "Tate's Match".

That story reminds us again of the shallowness of the human mind. Even a game called cricket is too complex for it to consider with easy truthfulness. And so the audience remembers Tate's dropped catch but forgets Hill's brilliant catch. And a hundred years later still glories in Bothams 149 at Headingly while forgetting that Dilleys magnifient 50 at the other end of the pitch made it all possible. We want rampant heros and villains and nothing less inbetween.
Fortunately, tonight is a reminder that older people and older players have the opportunity to applaud all the good things done by the modern-day players their ability to play outstanding attacking cricket, their flair and inspiration and innovation; and its a reminder also, in a quiet way, to the modern-day players that good things have happened before, that in every era there have always been cricketers who have served the game well and have loved it, and wanted to see it flourish
