The ATG World XI's game

Jager

International Debutant
Marcuss WAG.

Will the second and third rounds be played at different venues? MCG, Wanderers, Chennai etc. would all make interesting tests, but the first eight matches should probably all be at Lord's to make it uniform.

Anyone note that Warne got a hat-trick? Flintoff certainly a surprise package, too.

Really looking forward to the next few matches!

Yeah, surprised nobody commented on Warne's hatty...

Will drop you a line about how you want to do the other rounds Jager. I know you mentioned writeups etc but I reckon they'd be best saved for the KO rounds.

Jeez, won't be too many bowlers coming out of this feeling too good about themselves!
Next round of matches is going to be played in seam-friendly conditions and the round after that in spin-friendly conditions, so it will hopefully even out!

I got bored

Match #1: World XI vs World E XI
The World XI immediately stamped its authority on the ATG Test Championship with a ruthless innings and 368 run victory at Lord’s over the tournament’s dark horse: the World E XI. After Jack Hobbs was caught in the slips off the second ball of the day from a Waqar Younis away-swinger, Donald Bradman walked to the crease and mercilessly crushed the five-pronged bowling attack to the tune of 206 runs. Fans craned their necks to catch a glimpse of the greatest batsman of them all and sent him off with a standing ovation. Bradman was certainly not in short supply of batting partners – Vivian Richards (145) and Sachin Tendulkar (121) both scored centuries and Len Hutton and Garfield Sobers also contributed with stellar fifties. After over two days of fruitless bowling, Bradman declared the World XI’s innings on 761, with all five bowlers having gone for over 100 runs. Waqar Younis was the best of the group, taking the wickets of Hobbs, Richards, Imran and Warne, whilst Procter was responsible for removing Bradman and Hutton.

If the World E XI were disappointed with their bowling performance, their batting efforts will have most certainly left them shellshocked. Although Andy Flower was gutsy in his unbeaten 52, Shane Warne tore through the middle and bottom order, in doing so picking up a hat-trick including Benaud, Roberts and Steyn. His seven wickets saw the E XI put up a miserable total of 202, leading to a follow-on where Malcolm Marshall silenced any doubts over his side’s supremacy by annihilating the E XI top order. His control of the ball was phenomenal, his cutters and swing truly a spectacle to any viewer. Marshall took 7/53 in an innings of 191, with the heroic Dudley Nourse finishing unbeaten on 77 despite being hit multiple times on the torso by the West Indian genius.

The E XI will need to regroup quickly if they are any chance of making the finals, whereas the World XI’s emphatic performance will see their confidence sky-high going into the second round.

****, we're geeks. Lovin' it though.

Reckon C XI are being slept on. Lots of batting, lots of bowling (well-balanced too), and two genuine all-rounders.

Hard to be too critical of a bloke who scores 97 and 215 n/o from just 235 balls, but yeah he should have declared earlier! Good to see a top ranked team not win a match.

It means both A and D need to win both of their other matches to progress - surely a great setup for a very interesting group. I did my own MOTM awards, what do you think?

Match #1: DG Bradman 206
Match #2: A Kumble 5/78, 5 and 3/49
Match #3: GS Chappell 160 and 177
Match #4: A Flintoff 3/57, 24 and 7/48
Match #5: IR Bishop 11, 3/61, 8 and 6/23
Match #6: GA Headley 97 and 215*
Match #7: CL Walcott 170* and 75

Also... more boredom

Match #2: World F XI vs World H XI
The World H XI has upset the World F XI in a dominant innings and 182 run victory at Lord’s, only a fortnight after the World XI manhandled the World E XI. Anil Kumble was superb, taking match figures of 8/127 with his nagging leg-spin. Bob Simpson, Bruce Mitchell and Clive Lloyd scored half-centuries in the World F XI’s first innings and Macartney a hard-fought 92 in the second, but it was nowhere near enough to challenge the rampant H XI.

Virender Sehwag (166), Martin Crowe (107) and Maurice Tate (105) all scored centuries whilst Graeme Smith had his hopes shattered after being caught by Lloyd off the bowling of Courtney Walsh, the West Indian diving low to his left to snatch a thick outside edge. Smith trudged off dejectedly, two runs short of his century. Harold Larwood and Kapil Dev were thrashed around the ground for over 300 runs between them and will be looking to hit back hard in the next round, as such performances are particularly uncharacteristic of them. John Snow was also influential for the World H XI, taking six wickets for the match.

Cheers!

Yeah it was definitely the hardest match to choose a winner since Marshall got 8 too - I gave it to Bradman since Warne/Marshall were too hard to separate, but his ton was much bigger than Richards/Tendulkar and he came in in a pressure situation, third ball of the match.

Could go to any of the three really!

Yeah true I had first Warne/Marshall joint as didn't notice the hat trick, then used that factor as tie breaker but again Bradman came under pressure facing third ball of the innings and roaring Waqar bowling, can't be easy
