The ATG World XI's game

Glad to see that everyone wants a spinner. I think its an obvious decision at the moment with so many classy spinners available, but perhaps later on perhaps an all round spinning option and 3 quicks might be better off.

Vaas gets in just because I wanted to put a selection of players from various countries. Please feel free to mention names to include for the next round of bowlers though. :)

Yes

Also I think you meant to say Gavaskar and Sutcliffe for the openers.

I'm getting the feeling that I am the only one on CW who would be more than happy to have two or three spinners in my team :p I think Johnny Wardle should be featured in the spin department, as should Johnny Briggs.

I've added all the suggested spinners above for the next round. Lillee is going to be one of my choices for the B team most likely.

Does anyone think its necessary to have a shortlist for the two remaining positions in the team (once the 2 quicks and 1 spinner are sorted)?

I was just going to leave it open and let everyone decide as there would be too many people of various skills to make it a shortlist. I'm going to do the number 8/fourth bowler first and leave number 6 for last even though there is a good chance it will be Pollock.

Originally these battles were going to be 48 hours, but I think 24 is definitely enough. I will call the results in around 8 hours time as that is the most convenient time for me today.

I don't actually think it's necessary to have a shortlist for any of the positions tbh; regulated constraints for the sake of it.

Yeah true. My only concern is that eventually once we get to say the 8th team, peoples voting might be influenced by the first couple of people who vote because they've chosen a good player but have forgotten about someone who they actually rate higher.

Perhaps I'll just call it "players to potentially consider" and just have it there as a guide.

Sounds good. We'll have more freedom to vote, but I doubt the lesser-known players would win regardless, which is a shame :(

No votes for a while so that's long enough - Hadlee is through alongside Ambrose who receives 8 votes compared to Barnes's 7. I almost forgot but Murali cruises through also.

World XI
1 J Hobbs 2 L Hutton 3 D Bradman 4 V Richards 5 S Tendulkar 6 G Sobers 7 A Gilchrist 8 I Khan 9 S Warne 10 M Marshall 11 G McGrath

World A XI so far
1. S. Gavaskar
2. H. Sutcliffe
3. G. Headley
4. B. Lara
5. W. Hammond
6. ???
7. A. Knott
8. R. Hadlee
9. ???
10. C. Ambrose
11. M. Muralitharan

So 24 hours or so for the player who should fill the question marks currently in position 9. Of course this particularly player doesn't have to bat at 9, so it could be interesting to see if a specialist bowler or bowling all rounder gets the most votes.

So we start voting without a shortlist?

My votes for Keith Miller and Sydney Barnes

Something tells me, World A will finish with superior bowling attack (due to Miller vs Sobers if not anything else).

Hey Ankit, we'll just do number 9 first, not the number 6 role. The reason being is that we might chose a different option for 6 depending on who we select at 9.

So tomorrow we'll do a vote for number 6 and we can even do wicket keeper for Team B and two opening batsman at the same time if things seem too slow..

I think we need a player like Keith Miller here, but I don't think he should bat at 9 seeing as he usually batted in the top order (obviously he'd drop down slots in n ATG side, but he's no number 9). Should I vote for him in the 6 or 9 section?

Too late KK but Ambrose and Murali are through regardless. Please look at my other post and select the player to fill that fourth bowling spot. It can be a new ball bowler, a bowling all rounder, spinner, quick - whatever.

The choice is yours Jager. Obviously Knott could bat at 6 and you go with Miller and another bowler (batting too weak IMO) or you could play Miller at 8, Hadlee 9 so it wouldn't look too bad.

There are countless options here, but I would probably go whoever is the best bowler available for this pick and if he's not very good at batting, I would pick the best batsman for the number 6 spot.

Alright, so in this round we can basically just choose any two players and then we'll fit them into the side, but the general idea is that we absolutely need one extra bowler and then the next pick can be whatever we see fit?
