Hmm, wishing I vouched for Vinoo Mankad as the sole spinner here, would allow me to choose the fourth bowler as an out and out pace bowler, but I can't visage a side with Swann at 7. Thus, my selections are as follows.

Openers
Justin Langer
Glenn Turner

Middle Order Batsman
Brian McMillan

Fourth Bowler
Vinoo Mankad

So that leaves us with three quicks and two spinners, solid batting down to 7 with Swann a good number 8.

Blackham's also a quality 9, he played back in the days where pitches were uncovered and could end up with ridges in them.

Blackham should bat ahead of Swann IMO. He is described as a stubborn batsman so would probably be more useful getting some time to bat while Swann is a naturally attacking batsman.

I don't like my chances but 6. Woolley 7 Gregory 8 Blackham 9 Swann is a reasonably exciting middle to late order.

I actually can't get over the fact that Swann is rated ahead of all of the great Indian spinners from the past. Its funny India are known for their spinners, but only 1 spinner (Kumble) who has made it so far. I think its largely due to the fact that its difficult to judge the pecking order of these spinners. By all reports though, several of them were very classy, dangerous bowlers, 29-30 averages just don't look quite so good.

Yeah, it's difficult to separate them. I really haven't read enough about them to get into who I would rate over the others, with a natural bias for Bedi as a left arm orthodox!

I know the Australians of the time really rated Prasanna, and although earlier, Gupte was revered by Sobers and many others.

Done.

Also, agreed that it's strange that Swann is rated higher than the Indian greats, especially Gupte and Chandrasekhar, but he definitely hasn't had much assistance from the conditions he's bowled in and still has a fantastic record, plus he can bat. Trumble is another great that has been overlooked too.

Camo999

State 12th Man
Openers: G Turner / M Taylor

4th bowler: L Constantine (could also bat at no 7)

no 6 batsman: A De Silva

Blakus

State Vice-Captain
Glenn Turner and Michael Slater for the openers

Frank Woolley to bat at 6
Monty Noble to be right behind him at 7

Really hope Noble gets selected at some point. I rate him only behind Miller for Australian allrounders.

1. Archie McLaren and Michael Slater to open.
2. Shakib al-Hasan as the fourth bowler/all rounder.
3. Monty Noble to bat at 6 and bowl.

Shakib's record is impressive in its own right, let alone when you add in that he's playing for the weakest Test side.

I think you could almost count the votes for 2 & 3 together, and select the top two. Discretion to be used if we end up with Alderman and Cowie (or something) selected.

With the balance of the team, 6 and 7 both have to be All Rounders/batsmen who can bowl IMO.
