The worst thing is that the 9 and the pair were all at no 3 - he wasn't opening. Fail.

Also it is too soon to put Phil Hughes down in such lists - not just trolling, but insensitive bad taste trolling.

In answer to the question I'd go Hayden, Lawry, Morris, Langer in that order.

The sledging gnome might eclipse all of them in a few years.

5 years time Dave Warner will be in the top 3 of these lists, and maybe even the best if it was possible for a modern player to be as good as someone from back in the day.

By the times he reaches 100 tests, what would Warner need to have done to be considered our greatest LH opener/opener of all time?

Average 50 something I reckon, and with a SR superior to everyone else. I don't think that the SR will be an issue, just the consistency.

Would also be nice if some quality quicks arrived on the scene to replace the ageing Steyn and Anderson - so to give his new ball runs some more cred.

Steyn's only 31, is the premier paceman of the era and is considered by a few on here as ATG XI material, yet Warner is well on top 1:1 vs Steyn.

Warners technique is so good now.

TBH if Warner lasts 100 Tests he should be an Aussie ATG.

It's extremely unlikely he'll get a prolonged run in the Test side if his output drops to Cook levels, which suggests that if he makes it to a 100 Tests he will probably have quite a solid record behind him.

Then again Aus do currently have a shortage of batting talent, so IDK.

As long as his behaviour doesn't take a dip at the same time as his form, he'll get away with most of his form slumps.

Sorry, but Steyn has a much longer history of being consistently awesome with ATG average and one of the best sr in history. Warner is not comparable to steyn at all.

edit: oh whoops, you meant warner vs steyn in actual matches? Still don't think you can rate ATG to how you faced against one person.

The good thing for the gnome is that he is captaining Steyn and Boult in the IPL so he can learn more about their strengths and weaknesses (admittedly vice versa too).

To get to no1 he also needs some super big daddy tons ala Sehwag - can be done at a fast speed. Would also need to succeed in India where Hayden was so dominant.

All I meant was that Steyn hasn't really troubled Warner at all. Opening bowler vs opening bat and Warner has been very successful v Steyn
