**Official** Road to New Zealand in the West Indies 2012

Would bring him in when Marto retires/Gillespie gets injured again.

I'm not comfortable with Wagner and Gillespie in the same team. Opposition could score at five an over easily if they both have off days.

Neil Wagner shouldn't be allowed to play !!!!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

Typical ICC TRYING to make SURE the west indies lose
The ICC doesn't care about the "little old" West Indies 8-)

BTW, Narine clearly going to come in and beat Laker's figures, bowling New Zealand out for under 50 in every innings.

Trent Boult:
- dropped for Brent Arnel
- misses out in favour of Gillespie
- misses out as Vettori is 4th bowler
- probably gonna get overtaken by Wanger

Should just give up cricket imo

A bowler at his most effective when the red ball is reversing, he could find the abrasive conditions in the Caribbean suit him nicely.

Those expecting to see a genuine pace bowler, however, might be disappointed. The whispers from around the first-class traps over the summer were that Wagner's pace had tailed off, bringing him more into line with that New Zealand specialty of honest 130-135km/h toilers.

Some of that could be Wagner bowling within himself. That would be understandable. Veteran bowlers learn quickly there is more than one way to skin novice batsmen and bustling in at 140km/h-plus day in, day out can be counterproductive to long-term aspirations.

But part of that might be the workload he has endured at Otago. In the three seasons before he opted out of South Africa's quota system, the biggest workload he carried in a campaign was 216 overs.

For Otago, he has never bowled fewer than 219 overs in a season and over the past three years has racked up 302, 282 and 326 overs. That's 1129 first-class overs in four seasons.

As a comparison, over the past four seasons the younger Doug Bracewell has bowled 723 first-class overs and looked as if he was feeling the pinch by the end of the season.

Wagner has put in some serious shifts for a man renowned as an aggressive "shoulder" bowler.

He remains a Plunket Shield glutton, leading the wicket-taking charts by a mile in the past two seasons. Overall, his numbers are very good, with more than 230 wickets at close to 23.5 runs each.

But if eyewitness reports of reduced pace are true and the tailing off is not by design, then you have to wonder if his left shoulder has lost a bit of pop. If so, he might find the gulf between first-class and test cricket as vast as everyone else does.

One way or the other, New Zealand needs to find out - sooner rather than later.

Enjoyed that once again Kippax.

We need to find someone who can be as good as Martin. I am not expecting him to average 23 in tests. But 33 would be nice.

The interview question where they said - what does it mean to play for NZ I found interesting. Otago approached him and pitched the idea of playing for NZ? Interesting.

If he was prepared to wait 4 long years then he is committed to us. Unlike Myburgh.

which makes mark gillespie's comeback spell in the 2nd test all the more worthy as at age 32 he was consistently over 140k and troubled the saffas from the word go and more importantly back to back 6 wicket hauls in tests who was the last nz pacer to do that and how far back ?

Jesse Ryder, the New Zealand batsman, is unlikely to be considered for a central contract or selected for the upcoming tour of the West Indies, according to David White, New Zealand Cricket's chief executive. White said that Ryder needs to prove his "commitment to the game" before he could be considered for national selection once again.

"No, I don't think so," White told Fairfax NZ News, responding to a question on whether Ryder's IPL form puts him into contention for the summer's tour to the Caribbean. "It is great that he is playing cricket again but he is a fair way from being considered for New Zealand.

"He needs to prove to the selectors and New Zealand Cricket his commitment to the game, and that means on and off the field. He needs to do a lot of work on a lot of things like fitness, attitude ... and be exemplary off the park."

Ryder has scored 217 runs in seven games for Pune Warriors so far, with two half-centuries. He had travelled to India for the IPL with a support structure consisting of his manager and clinical psychologist in place, coming off an 'indefinite break' from cricket that he had announced in March. That announcement came after Ryder was dropped from the New Zealand squad for the third ODI against South Africa for breaking team protocol and then left out of the Test series as well.

When Ryder had announced his participation in the IPL, White had extended his support. "It's really positive that Jesse has reached the point where here is ready to play competitive cricket again," he had said. "He has clear expectations from NZC in terms of what is required from him to make a return to international cricket and playing in the IPL is a good first step. We are proud of the progress he has made and we will continue to support him through what has been a tough time."

Ryder has had a history of disciplinary issues, prompting questions about his commitment to New Zealand cricket. Previously, in August 2010, he was fined for "intoxicated and rowdy" behaviour at a hotel during an indoor cricket tournament and he said he had feared for his career while NZC was investigating the incident. The most serious of Ryder's indiscretions was in 2008, when he put his right hand through a glass window during a late-night session at a Christchurch bar. In January 2009, NZC said Ryder had given up alcohol after another incident, which resulted in him missing an ODI against West Indies.

I'd include him in the Indian tour if he lost a few kgs. He needs to come back in an away tour so he's not around NZ media etc.
