Int ODI is one of the most competitve sports league in the world

That's his point though. It's not even a remote possibility.
Surely in every sports league in the world there will exist a number of teams for whom winning the league that particular year is completely unrealistic?

Hasn't the AFL expanded recently? How realistic is it to expect either of the new franchises to be in a Grand Final this season?

The difference between Europe and Australia is that in Europe, teams that aren't good enough don't get an artificial hand up in the form of the draft. And a salary cap doesn't promote competition, it promotes mediocrity.

The number of teams in the AFL who can't win the GF this year isn't 85-90% of the league. The difference in potential winners is huge when you compare AFL to the Premier League. It expands even more when you consider who could end up "top 4", whereby legitimately 12-14 AFL teams could end up top 4 this year.

Last year a team went from bottom (16th) to top 4 in one season.

I'm not going to get into an argument about salary cap or whatever. But the fact is there is a far higher percentage of teams who have no hope in hell of winning the league this season in the Premier League compared to the AFL. The AFL is a more competitive competition. You can think its an artificial boost, or it promotes mediocrity or whatever. But the AFL is more competitive, and that's the fact that Benchy is pointing out.

Tottenham have built themselves up as challengers

Priceless. That'll be that natural Scouse wit, eh?

possibly Ipswich have all finished top 4.
Fifth, tbf.

Finals series are ****ing dire in a league competition. And surely the 3 new teams is an example of competition - those teams not good enough are demoted, instead of stinking up the joint year on year.
Disagree slightly about finals series. In the NRL, AFL and our own Super League they serve a purpose because not every team plays each other twice home and away. Obviously it's a real disadvantage if a team has to play (say) Collingwood or St George twice in a season but (say) Gold Coast or Cronulla only once.

:p Well for 2/3 of the season they were right up there. Obviously they've bottled it big time.

Thought that might have been the case but the point still stands

Yeah but for me not playing each time twice is a big problem.
