I guess thats why Jaques wasn't signed he is now a foreigner, but isn't Tom Cooper?
Anyway Pattinson turning his back on England for the BBL strange.

Can't really see the point in the Hurricanes signing Cowan. As far as I can tell, our full-strength batting line-up will be;

Ponting
Paine
Birt
Shah
Bailey
Blizzard

Unless Cowan plays instead of Blizzard (which I doubt), he won't get into that line-up. When Ponting leaves to play tests, so will Cowan and Wells will walk in. Unless Cowan gets dropped from the test team I'm not sure how he will fit in there.

Also, we really need to shorten our tail by getting a good allrounder to bat at 7. Matt Johnson hasn't been re-signed and all the other good Australian allrounders seem to be taken. I'm hoping we don't sign Rana again (no doubt The Mercury newspaper will write a negative article about it) and get somebody like Muhmudullah, Dwayne Smith, Dwayne Bravo, RTD or even some random English county player (eg. Chris Woakes) to fill this role.

Plus Doug can fill the 'cult hero' role left by Rana, which is for some reason necessary...

Marmadoola, Shakib, Woakes would all fill the #7 role nicely, IMO.

They would have to bowl four overs every game though, so RtD is probably out. Woakes, despite not having the greatest of T20 records, would be my pick.

Man Patto, not Patto jnr.

BBC quotes Mike Newell (Notts director of cricket) as saying he might get a gig for Notts as their 2nd overseas player for the T20s next year.

Imagine what he'd earn for the Renegades and for the Outlaws as a T20 specialist would be pretty much on a par with his Notts contract anyway.

Must be the most random England test cap I can recall.

should have played more tests tbh
Didn't look horrible on debut, tbf. I think there was always the suspicion that some of his teammates felt the selectors were applying the letter rather than the spirit of the eligibility rules tho & Pattinson was always on the outers.

Think he's got some kids, and maybe as they near school age he's not wanting to head over to England for as long a period each year.

Yep, fair point.

Also, as Newell says in the story I linked to, he's 32 now and those niggles might take longer and longer to shake off. 4 overs every second or third day for a few weeks might be just what he needs to prolong his career.

Admittedly he hasn't got as many miles on the clock as some 32 YOs but, as I understand, he was a roofer before he went full time pro, which I can't imagine is a panacea for backs.

i still don't quite understand why the R's or Stars didn't sign him as an overseas player during the first signing period. he torn up the english t20 so they knew he had form. and they could have sent out an SOS when Dernbach turned out to be crap (although he might have been injured at that point)

Definitely wouldn't have fit into the Australian cricket culture. Whether that's a good or bad thing is not me to judge.

Why wasn't Warner picked in any side for the BBL? Is it because they are assuming he won't be available due to international commitments?
