Play them as f****** overseas players then, FFS. If South Australia can sign Johan f****** Botha, who has ZERO connection to Australia to begin with, there shouldn't be any issue with picking a former Australian Test player who feels like playing as a local in England.

Jaques, Robson, Magoffin, Hogan et al. should just be played as their state's overseas player. It's ridiculous they don't, FFS.

NSW to be left with no openers and be forced to play Sam Robson as an overseas player.

Maddinson and Patterson to gun it this year, IMO.

Hughes, Harris, Klinger, Cooper, (Batsman-that-isn't-Borgas), Christian, Botha, Ludeman/C***thwaite, Richardson, (Bowler) , George.
Exactly.

But let's assume no injuries so no need for backups. The team looks mildly competitive on paper but there are a lot of ifs in the 4-day team for both bats and bowls. Massive didn't have a great year in 11/12 so there's questions over him long-term and I do wonder whether Cooper and Christian will be able to follow-up last year's form. There's no genuine bowling gun there either, the whole attack reeks of 'serviceable' and the options aren't promising.

As I've said many times, SA have a cricketing system (used very loosely) which doesn't breed FC cricketers any more. Chadd Sayers averaged 12 with the ball last season and didn't look threatening at all when picked for SA and he's probably the best of the bunch; the top-10 were a bunch med-quick swing-bowlers, ripe for domination against batters of any class. So you're left with imports, hoping the blokes who showed form last year maintain it and that the bats don't get fatigued putting up 300+ a few times in a row only to watch the oppo sail past it at 4+/over. The requirement is a hell of a lot of ducks lining up for the team to be competitive. It's not impossible but it's pretty damn improbable.

Losing Hughes is a disaster for NSW. They need to redouble their efforts to keep Khawaja and Smith.

NSW starting XI as it stands:

Maddison
Khawaja
Smith
Rohrer
Patterson
Henriques
Nevill (WK)
O'Keefe (c)
Copeland
Bollinger
Hazlewood

With Cruickshank, Hauritz and Lalor in reserve.

Hauritz wouldn't be that great a loss. Hughes however most definitely is.

Can't lose anymore young batters, our batting pool is drained dried. Bowling on the other hand is still full of depth.

Suits the selectors, they're intent on playing 8 bowlers per game anyway..

So did Paine, according to channel 9 news here.

Stoked for Rainbird and Allenby, went to school with those guys (although never really knew them that well personally).

Botha's love affair with lamingtons won the locals over iirc.

Daniel Hughes from north sydney(think thats his last name). would be the ideal replacement for Phil Hughes,or they could Open up with Dawson,i have no hope Khawajah will stay with the Blues.
