MacGilla puts paid to the Cribbite Stats Nuffies (and Buchanan)

Seriously though there's nothing to disagree with about that article. All the algorithms and data in the world will be absolutely useless without a proper understanding of the physical realities of the game by which to put the numbers into context for analysis. If you're too wrapped up in your pitch maps to comprehend the obvious reason why batsmen wouldn't be scoring many runs against big spinning leg breaks that pitched on off stump then you need to watch more cricket.

True that

I thought it was funny that most of Buchanan's emails to the players were jokes he was passing on.

It's a serious sledge from MacGill.

Yet Steve Waugh, y'know, the captain and main decision-maker of the side, loved Buchanan and his useless insights.

The worst part of the article is just how long ago this went down. Warne and MacGill, extremis ludditis, didn't like Buchanan and his technological ways. We get it. It's old, tired and boring, like MacGill and Warne. The false equivalency to Sabrmetrics shows how little MacGill knows about the topic (not that I'm suggested using data collected from cricket isn't pretty error-prone).
