I'm just gutted about this. New Zealand cricket just can't afford to lose a player of Ryder's talent.
Agree with you in regard to his talent, but no player should be bigger than the team and be constantly allowed to get away with things like this time after time.

He's been given so many chances that I wouldn't be surprised if they say that's that with him and move on to some other player who's actually committed to playing for his country.

I actually haven't seen any confirmation from any sources, besides the stuff article, that Ryder has been ruled out of the tests. NZherald and Cricinfo both say that he's just out for the 3rd ODI, and that the test team will be named tomorrow.

Its not like Ryder is likely to perform with all this **** going on anyway. He has to spend some time away from cricket IMO.

Anyone think they might pick van Wyk - either as a batsman, or as keeper with Watling going up the order? He (van Wyk) did make a couple of critical scores in a low-scoring match vs Otago last week.

agree with the above
And we also cant continue to afford to carry the love child of arjuna ranatunga and Andrew symonds - he's a cancer.

Bracewell is going to be interesting, word seems
To be that he lives a hard lifestyle....
Not necessarily disagreeing with kicking him out (though obv don't know the full details), but I think d.o.g and I were referring to the whole situation, Ryder's career possibly near an end, being such a waste.

Would be very interesting to know what his team-mates really think of him. If he really is a cancerous negative influence on the team then I would be fully in favour of saying goodbye. But of course we won't get to hear about this until this crop get someone to write their biographies

Definitely wouldn't count it out. He's been scoring runs left right and centre and he's already been around the squad. Would be tough to make his debut v his native country though.

Doing what, exactly?

If they throw the book at a guy with a drinking problem and tell him he will never play for New Zealand again, what do you think he's gonna do?

NZ cricket somehow has to find a way to make it work with Ryder. Like I said before, we can't afford to lose his talent.

But at the same time, let it be known that it can only go so far. It's a tough one.

But, for **** sake, what is it with New Zealand cricket since Hadlee retired?

How many careers have been consigned to the scrapheap because of injury, and now, discipline problems? How long, oh lord, how long?

I never said he should never play for them again. He should just be told he has to prove that he's sorted himself out first. Hardly complicated.

Or he could come and play for Ireland. He'd fit right in :p

Steve Rixon and John Graham were able to reign some interesting personalities in. Learn how they did it and apply it to Ryder imo.

Ryder should be dropped for a lengthly period of time. He might be a good batsman, but he could be a lot better and he is dragging others down with him in this case.

If Ryder never makes it, it's a reflection of Jesse's actions, not NZCs. They are not his parents, they are his employers and there is always someone next in line who might not be a star but who will actually pull their weight.

This without a doubt.

New Zealand may lack the depth of cricketers but a team is bigger than any individual and I would rather have an extra hard-working cricketer be part of my team than a person who thinks their talent will just bring them into the team without having to do the hard work.

He actually scored something like 70 odd against Finn and Wagner not too long ago as well. They wouldn't pick him as a keeper after all that's happened with Watling. He's a decent pick for a specialist batsman though.

I expected Wright to be really good at that as well. A little disappointed in his tenure so far in that regard.

It was funny to him clowning around yesterday after he came back on the field following the finger injury.

Andy mckay at last looking like a really good international fast bowler pace consistentley above 140k and reverse swing, Tarun nathula looks promising with his leggies but rob nicol what a ****oo that one was.
as for jesse ryder why not go on the other perpective and let him have a drink unless he gets pissed the night before a game, new zealand can not afford to loose a player of his talent.

This, this and this! It's utterly ridiculous to blame NZC or anyone else for Ryder's behaviour.
Personally I think it's time to move on and look for a permanent replacement.

So...... this Luke Ronchi guy.... when does he qualify?

Anyone else now beyond worried about Tim Southee's credentials as an international player? I think he's suffering from playing when out of form as we don't have the depth to be able to send him back to domestic and get some proper bowling under his belt.

It aint that easy, champion. He broke protocol this time - injured players are not allowed to drink alcohol because it slows their recovery. So his dedication to wanting to play international cricket is a lot less than optimal.

I wouldn't play him for the rest of the summer. At least. And hell, let him miss the Windies trip and a few rumbos over there. That'll sting.

Oh and by the way Mr Henry and everyone else who is in his fan club - de Grandhomme is one of the replacements! Happy days!

I'm really excited to see the test team named later today. I wouldn't have had Ryder in the mix anyway if it hadn't been for Brownlie's broken finger. SO not a huge loss IMO if he is 'removed from consideration'.

I'm really interested in who they name as number 5, personally I think Ryder is always just moments away from self-imposed self destruction or an injury anyway so I'm am glad we can actually get on with some proper long term planning.

After the test series v Australia in November my rating of Ryder as a cricketer plummeted anyway, that was the worse batting I have seen in a series by an NZ specialist batsman, and I have seen some terrible NZ batsmen in my time.

Options:
1. Nicol slots in at number 5 (I think this most likely - but I am concerned by how troubled he was by Steyn in Napier - and Plunket Shiled numbers don't really demand selection)
2. Guptill moves into the middle order and we bring in a specialist test opener (Problem is the form of the contenders McIntosh & How. Therefore Brodie could be a Turner like selection bolter)

Broom's loss of form, and Flynn's long and slow return from injury couldn't have been more badly timed for them.

The 79 day gap in the Plunket Shield schedule has come back to bite us in the ass. Selection is going to be based on only a maximum of 2 FC matches each.

Guptill is one of the two best equipped players in the country to handle Steyn, Philander etc with the new ball, don't see any reason to move him. Would be more happy to see McCullum move down a place if bringing in a genuine opener is the preferred route.

I think the squad they name will be something along these lines:

1. Guptill
2. McCullum
3. Williamson
4. Taylor (c)
5. Nicol
6. Franklin
7. Vettori
8. Watling
9. Bracewell
10. Southee
11. Martin

12. Boult
13. Wells

Lack of a decent middle order option (ie Brownlie or Ryder) means Boult will miss out so we can play two extra batsmen that can bowl a few overs instead. If Uni Oval plays like it has over the last few games we'll need the extra batsman and shouldn't need four quicks anyway. They may open with Nicol, put McCullum at 3 and Williamson at 5 but will depend on how Nicol goes tomorrow I think.
