Just to emphasise how good Guptill's been lately, since October hes made 276 T20 International runs in 4 matches and been dismissed once, 411 runs in 5 ODIs at 82.50, a century and a fifty in three tests along with wickets of an opening batsman and a wicketkeeper-batsman. Plus he was the best player in the HRV Cup (504 runs at 72) and scored 222 runs in his one Plunkett Shield appearance. Long may he maintain those Bradmanesque numbers!
Not to be a Debbie Downer, but haven't essentially all of those T20I and ODI runs come against Zimbabwe, a team who most've us have spent the last month lambasting as little better than a good club side?

Yeah, Guptill averages something like 31 against non-minnows in ODIs and his test record is probably even worse. This is his chance to prove himself though.

I see nothing wrong with the way McCullum has been playing lately. In recent times he has been a little bit too aggressive, it's nice to see a little bit of early patience before he starts going after the bowler. There is no need to be uber-aggressive when you have someone set at the other end. Just take singles, get your eye in, and let the set bloke have the strike.
AWTA.

There will be ample time to complain about McCullum and the other batsmen when we start losing again. :p

Just as an aside, the standard of umpiring in that game was atrocious.

T20's rubbish cricket so you would expect that they wouldn't want to risk injury for the tests ahead.

Pretty poor performance from SA but they're probably still acclimatising. Their batting will always struggle when they have Ingram who's not good enough to play international cricket at #3 they give Albie Morkel so few balls to face.
Side they put out on Friday was rubbish. Levi on debut, so probably nervous, Amla probably not suited for 20/20s after the first 6 overs and then it just is AB. Duminy keeps batting like this, watches wickets go around him, shuts up shop for 5 overs too many and then slogs and gets out. Albie needs to be batting top five, ideally 4. Get Faf in there.

Attack was toothless as well. Botha doesn't take wickets, Albie doesn' and Lopsy is always likely to go for many on a good true surface.

NZ look good by contrast. Really top of their game. Should be a good series. South Africa now knows (if they didn't) NZ mean business.

Yeah. If anyone is damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't it's McCullum.

Look at the way Franklin approached his innings in the last game v Zim. Was 3 from 8 as I remember? And caught up strike rate as he got comfortable, assessed the conditions. We may have wickets in hand below McCullum but none of them are as accomplished as him.

Batting always seems brittle. Agree re Faf, no longer sure why Albie (been forever, it seems) or Ingram (perhaps a few more matches) should stay. Botha a very useful lower order bat, move him up. Anyways, well played Aotearoa.

I've heard Deon Nash and a few commentators interviewed over the past few days and they seem pretty confident that they can roll SA. They seem to rate their attack as better and they wil have five bowlers. They also think that the Proteas are clueless against spin!

Yeah that's bull****. Hira, Nicol, and McCullum don't spin it.

Neither does Vettori in Tests. They didn't get where they have in the game by being rubbish at playing spin. Nash and co would do well to not ape CH9 commentators and have a bit of knowledge about the sides that turn up on our doorstep.

Amazing how quickly people forget that South African batsmen have done well in India over the years. I can only assume they're confusing this with the fact South Africa have had few good spinners in their bowling line-up.

Simon Doull on the TV commentary has labelled South Africa 'a bunch of bullies'.

What's up with that?

De Lange's playing after only one previous T20 match. Is SA full one experimenting or what? Simon Doull has called SA a bunch of bullies!

Seddon Park is an amazing sight. Look at that crowd! Well done, Hamilton.
