How would you find place for so many all-rounders?

So I was just looking through some World series scorecards. It would have been difficult looking for the best XI with all the all-rounders.

WORLD XI squad over 77-78 and 78-79 seasons

Tony Greig (England)
Denis Amiss (England)
Asif Iqbal (Pakistan)
Eddie Barlow (South Africa)
Richard Hadlee (New Zealand)
Imran Khan (Pakistan)
Javed Miandad (Pakistan)
Alan Knott (England)
Garth le Roux (South Africa)
Haroon Rashid (Pakistan)
Majid Khan (Pakistan)
Mushtaq Mohammed (Pakistan)
Mike Procter (South Africa)
Clive Rice (South Africa)
Barry Richards (South Africa)
Sarfraz Nawaz (Pakistan)
John Snow (England)
Derek Underwood (England)
Bob Woolmer (England)
Zaheer Abbas (Pakistan)

Imran wasn't really an established all rounder at that point.

Haroon Rashids was mediocre and Asif Iqbal was mainly a batsman. Richard Hadlee too was not the Richard Hadlee of the 80s.

Which ones are you talking about?

Well, I was going for Greig, Barlow, Rice, Procter, Imraan and Hadlee.

Any side made from that bunch would have been very decent tbh.

South Africa used to get Cronje, Kallis, Kluesner, Pollock and Symcox (Has a Test ton so arguably an all-rounder) into the same XI plenty of times. Hell, they probably played a few Tests with McMillan in the side as well. Obviously not an overly successful tactic, but they were still a good side and tough to beat (unless they played Australia!)

It's one of those problems that's nice to have, especially if they're bowling all-rounders.

If a chap is a good enough bowler to make the team on that alone (and Hadlee, Imran, Proctor & Rice certainly were) then their batting is just a bonus.

With batting all-rounders though there's probably some law of diminishing returns in play as the more there are in a team the less used they're likely to be. Having both Barlow and Greig might be a waste as neither would bowl a full complement.

Having loads of batting allrounders isn't particularly useful.

Can never have too many bowling allrounders though.

Oh Please. Symcox was not an all rounder
Considering that he had a Test batting average of 28, and a FC batting average of 26, I would definitely consider him a bowling all rounder.

Interested at how a Test century makes one an all-rounder though - lucky Agarkar!
