Chris Harris

I think this guy is past his best. A few years back he was a brilliant one day batsmen. Now he just causes me to get really angry. He just fluffs around for ages, and does the team no good.

I think its time for him to retire, or at least get dropped from the New Zealand ODI side...

yo'uve gotta b kidding me!

i agree, his batting is no way near wat it used 2 b..but his bowling is still very good...and his fielding...magnificent!

he is an important member of your ODI squad, mainly becoz of his bowling

He is ALMOST at the end...but he got at least another year left in him...maybe two

Nah it's time for him to make way to a younger player. He doesnt have that special something anymore. He can't win games... not one boundary in his innings against aus. and looked out of his depth at times. no idea against hogg.

I disagree.

His bowling has gone off the boil and those who are good players of spin have taken him apart. Lately he is going at over 6 an over.

He is simply not retiring and being freeloading off his reputation.

When I was growing up, Harris for me, used to come in, last ten overs, NZ in a bit of trouble, make a 50 or so, hit some sixes, come on and take some wickets and NZ would win.

It always seemed to be like that for me.

But now he is not performing.

Harris won't be around for the ODI's in NZ later in the summer.

He causes too many run-outs, slows the run-rate, takes up all the strike & forces other players to panic.
To me that is one part of the reason why NZ are struggling in ODI's, his cricket is off-setting other negative things for NZ.

I don't want to blame it entirely on Harris because there are also serious problems at the top order that also need addressing e.g. Chris Nevin & Lou Vincent.

And more importantly problems with the like of Fleming opening, McMillan batting too far down the order, Cairns still being injured all the time and bowling complete tripe when he gets fit, and the excuse for a bowler called Jacob Oram.

Actually no..the bowling is not complete tripe...for most of the time.

In 4 of the last 6 encounters against Australia, NZ have had Australia at least 4-50 on all of those occassions & each time it has been Michael Bevan who has dug them out to a defendable total.

Twice NZ had Australia in deep trouble at 6/80 at the MCG & 7/80 at St Georges Park.

I think you'll find its the batting that is the 'complete tripe', should NZ discover 2 top order batsmen who can actually stay in & also find a way to get Bevan out quickly, our luck may change against Australia.

We just can't finish them off...but anyway i'd like to see other teams do any better. We seem to cop all the criticism because we lose games we should sometimes win...I don't see many other teams that manage to get themselves into a winning position against Australia too often.

Maybe India & Sri Lanka will do it occassionally.

The question for me is when was the last time Harris did anything good for the side, a notable proformace?????????

A long long long long time.........................................

Im not very keen on blaming everything on Harris, but I think age has caught up with him & i've noticed his batting average has decreased by about 3 which is not good considering how many matches he has played.

His bowling isn't affective anymore either...back in his prime, he would bowl 10 overs & take 2 wickets for 25..but these days he's bowling just 4 overs & getting hit for 20 or 30 runs and maybe he'll pick up a fluke wicket in the process.

He is still fielding well, but even in this series i've noticed him make some unusual errors at point and that to me is also another bad sign.

So who can NZ replace Harris with? well...There are quite a few options but i'd like NZ to consider a specialist batsman instead of going for another all-rounder.
The selectors supposedly say picking 4 or 5 all-rounders balances the team, well thats BS, I think its actually unbalancing the team & part of the reason why we have such inconsistent performances.

Care to give me reasons why Oram is a excuse of a bowler?

Of the currant lot of bowlers (not counting Doull,Nash, O'Connor, Allott) who do you rate as NZ's best bowler or who is the best bowler in your view?

shane bond by a MILE! tuffey is good as well... But after that, they got nothing...Oram is ok, not an excuse... a decent bowler, not a strike bowler thoguh

Oram has been another victim of this crazy selection policy...there is no way he can open the bowling at international cricket.

At best he's a 1st change bowler, but I think maybe he's more suited to bowling 2nd change.

New Zealand also beat Australia 3 times in that VB Series. They have been the team that has most exposed Australia's shortcomings in the one-day game in recent years.
However, in each of those games they had some decent bowlers - Nash, Cairns and Harris in their better days, Bond... better than the like of Styris, Oram, Vettori and co.
Michael Bevan has dug Australia out of holes on more than a few occasions and it's no massive shame to concede runs to him.

Oram had an average of under 25 before this tournament, and thank God he got 1 wicket in the entire thing and went for over 5.5-an-over. That, for me, is a good indicator of a "bad pitch bully", Oram has had a lot of very poor pitches recently (BankAlfalah, World Cup, India ODIs) and has cashed-in. Now he's faced some decent batting on some decent pitches his inaccuracy has been ruthlessly exposed.
As for NZ's best bowler, in ODIs it's Shane Bond without a question, in Tests Vettori equally undoubtedly.

Though I would have said Cairns and Harris respectively but for recent losses of form.

Cairns & Harris represent yesteryears glories - Cairns hasn't contributed since the VB series and that was only with the bat v RSA. Harris hasn't contributed since the WI tour and that was in a Test match!!!!

Harris used to be NZ's answer to Bevan & his greatest moment came in the loosing semi (I think) to AUS in the WC in India, when who else but Bevan got AUS up to win. Bevan would have to be the bogey man in the AUS team for NZ - they have an effective game plan for just about everyone else in the batting lineup except for him!

Oram is not a strike bowler & his previous successes have come as 1st or 2nd change - certainly he has not been required to bowl so much at 'the death' as he has in this series. Mills is supposedly in the squad as an 'at the death' specialist, same goes for Hitchcock. IMO the selectors on this tour are doing a 'Vincent' on Oram - maybe injuries etc have forced their hand somewhat, but they have had other selection options to enable Oram to continue in his 'normal' role.

From memory Styris has not done much ODI bowling since the WI tour. He did not bowl a lot of overs in either the Home series V India, nor in the WC in RSA. Although he may have started in ODI primarily as a bowler, injuries have made him change his game & now he must be considered a batsman who bowls occaisionally, rather than as one of the 5 primary bowlers - much the same as Astle & Macca.

Vincent has actually looked fairly reasonable in his last couple of outings but has been victim of some dubious (no just plain wrong & bad) umpire decisions.

Nevin is not a ODI opener, and with McCullum finding some runs & the prospect of Adams return, it is difficult to see his career extending much beyond the PAkistan ODI series.

I'm happy enough with the general performance of the team apart from the 2 most crucial areas - the top order batting, and the bowling at the death in the last 10 overs. IMO this is where specialist players MUST be selected.

It is to be hoped that the withdrawl of the middle order from the Pakistan tour will force the selectors into making some positive selections - but not in the middle order to be temporary replacements for those withdrawls. They must select a viable top order to complement the middle & lower orders - if they fail to do so then NZ will not only loose the ODI series in Pakistan, but also the Home series v RSA, if not the Home Tests v Pakistan as well.

In a strange way perhaps their not being available to go to Pakistan is the best thing those 4 players can do at the moment for their confidence & careers!!!!!

Maybe a couple of other players should think along the same lines??????
