NZ Test Match Summer News and Thoughts

Surely the solution is simply having McCullum drop down and retake the gloves, then have Vettori come in for Young. **** knows who would open but its the most logical step
Having him play as a specialist batsman isn't a tactical move by selectors; it's one he chose himself as a result of back and knee injuries. He's not available as a keeper.

I don't think scoring a quickfire ton in a meaningless practice match, scoring the bulk of your runs against Steve Smith, Michael Beer, Ben Cutting and Mitchell Starc should really count for much at all though. Sure, he's not going to get conditions like he did in the Brisbane and Hobart Tests either but they match typical Test match conditions a lot more than the ridiculous six-hitting innings did.
I'm not suggesting Ryder's innings should be the only factor in retaining him. But it does show some kind of semblance of ability to score runs and he is a proven Test performer.

Yeah, dropping him would be harsh, but he's certainly the 'worst' of the middle order batsmen at the moment, so if New Zealand want to play four specialist bowlers and Vettori then he's either going to have to open or be left out.

Yeah that doesn't really solve anything though.
It doesn't solve anything...but it means if Guptil goes Watling is coming in (Maybe if the article insinuation is correct).
If this is correct then there is no spot for Ryder and it becomes Ryder or Boult. One of them has scored a 200 and one of them has taken 3 wickets in an inning.

I think I have seen enough of Reece Young. Hop**** didn't get that many chances so don't see why young should when we have choices.

TBH Williamson hasn't really set the world on fire in the Test arena this year.

There's been as much if not more talk of four seamers as there has been of Twatling coming in though.

Fine, then Guptill should be dropped if Wright has decided on five bowlers. Don't think he's terrible but Ryder is a major talent who has to be persisted with. If its four bowlers then obviously Boult makes way.

Those are the only options imo

Boam needs to start by regularly usurping Woodcock in the batting order. He will be a bc though top prospect.

There is something about our domestic circuit that allows Jimmy, Hopguns, Ingram, and others to light it up while being technically deficient and simply not good enough at the next level.

How dare you compare Jimmy to those hacks!

I'm pretty excited about the fact some of you will never be selectors.

Any chance anyone giving dues to the great man Thomas Martin? He's playing the rest of the Test summer, he's earned it. And I'm excited about watching him, more than I am Southee, Boult etc.

to be fair the openers aren't working and young can't score a run, solution stick with guptill who's worth his place as a slipper a few more runs would be nice, put mccullum back to keeping and down the order, stick with ryder and williamson, move brownlee up to 3 and find an opener and stick with a four man attack for the time been.

Kinda sick of all the numpties suggesting the "solution" is for McCullum to keep in Tests. I bet the selectors are kicking themselves, "why didn't we think of that?".

For the umteenth time, McCullum has stated that due to knee and back problems he is unavailable to keep wicket in Test matches. He plays as a specialist batsman or he doesn't play. Those are the selectors only two options.
