An effort to pick an All-time ODI XI

Dear CWers,

We have seen thousands of ODIs in last few decades. ODIs gave us some very talented players but true match winners are a few. It’s time to pick the best of the lot. Visitors/members @ CricZo will be able to vote ( on criczo website as soon as we are done developing that particular page ) for their favourite players to be picked from finest of 100 players, we handpicked from ALL ODI playing nations.

We have these 2 combinations in our mind :

4 batsmen + 2 all rounders + 1 wicket keeper + 4 bowlers
5 batsmen + 1 all rounder + 1 wicket keeper + 4 bowlers

Now all we have to do is to pick 100 players so we can throw them into the pool for VISITORS to come and pick their XI.

We will go ahead with the players with MAXIMUM votes. ( From respective categories )

Any other ideas are welcomes too.

Regards,
Masud

the only shoo ins for me would be richards, tendulkar, bevan, akram, garner and murali. after that it's a much of a muchness. and yes, that includes gilly, since dhoni is surely a strong contender for the keeper spot. in fact, dhoni could, conceivably, threaten bevan's place assuming one is not inclined towards to stabilisers/finishers in the same team.

I'll pick one among these two teams (or a combination of the two+Hadlee+Miandad, keeping the combination in mind):

Team 1:
Brian Lara
Sachin Tendulkar
Viv Richards*
Zaheer Abbas
Michael Bevan
Mahendra Dhoni+
Kapil Dev
Shaun Pollock
Wasim Akram
Joel Garner
Muttiah Muralitharan

Team 2:
Sanath Jayasuriya
Sachin Tendulkar
Viv Richards*
Ricky Ponting
Michael Bevan
Mahendra Dhoni+
Lance Klusener
Wasim Akram
Joel Garner
Muttiah Muralitharan
Glenn McGrath

This would be my team :

Adam Gilchrist ( + )
Sachin Tendulkar
Brian Lara
Vivian Richards ( c )
Zaheer Abbas
Micheal Bevan
Lance Klusener
Shaun Pollock
Wasim Akram
Saqlain Mushtaq
Joel Garner

12th man : Glenn McGrath

I saw how certain players were favored in the ICC's all time test thingy, so I am sure people will favor their countrymen here as well. ( Once the voting starts )

Will take a stab with the mostly orthodox:

Sachin Tendulkar
Adam Gilchrist+
Ricky Ponting
Viv Richards
Brian Lara
Michael Bevan
Imran Khan (4) (c)
Wasim Akram (2)
Joel Garner (3)
Muttiah Muralitharan (5)
Glenn McGrath (1)

Though I got thinking about a variant, that may well beat them on a spin-heavy wicket. This one gets an idea I quite like, having two trademark "finishers" in the middle order. Would think having them in partnership would be something of a nightmare to have to deal with.

Sachin Tendulkar
Sanath Jayasuriya (5)
Ricky Ponting
Viv Richards
Brian Lara
Michael Bevan
Mahedra Singh Dhoni+
Wasim Akram (2)
Waqar Younis (3)
Muttiah Muralitharan (4)
Glenn McGrath (1)

Why is everyone picking Lara?
He is ***y.

Tendulkar
Gilchrist
Ponting
Lara
Richards
Bevan
Klusener
Wasim
Warne
Garner
McGrath

12th Watson

I am aware that supposedly Murali > Warne in ODI but I like Warne more in the big games and I don't want a tail longer than a diplodocus

NUFAN

Y no Afghanistan flag
We did an all time 50 greatest ODI players quite recently and I think overall the players up the top were the best.

My team would be:

1. Adam Gilchrist
2. Sachin Tendulkar
3. Ricky Ponting
4. Viv Richards
5. Dean Jones
6. Michael Bevan
7. Shaun Pollock
8. Wasim Akram
9. Joel Garner
10. Muttiah Muralitharan
11. Glenn McGrath

Jones is probably the big shock, but what a player he was.
