Ladies and gentlemen (and Flem), this is not a laughing matter. This is the cricketing event of the Southern Hemisphere summer. This isn't just an Australian event; this will be a global occasion as television sets around the world tune in to see superstars from all around the world compete for the honour and prestige of a KFC variety bucket with a side of gravy. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to present to you the overseas stars who will be captivating your interest over the next 2 months:

Kieron Pollard (Adelaide Strikers)

Brendan McCullum (Brisbane Heat)

Daniel Vettori (Brisbane Heat)

Rana Naved-ul-Hasan (Hobart Hurricanes)

Owais Shah (Hobart Hurricanes)

Abdul Razzaq (Melbourne Renegades)

Shahid Afridi (Melbourne Renegades)

As CricketWeb's servers are only configured to handle the excitement of 10 pictures in any one post, stay tuned for the mouthwatering second installment!

Your overseas stars (continued)

Luke Wright (Melbourne Stars)

Paul Collingwood (Perth Scorchers)

Herschelle Gibbs (Perth Scorchers)

Michael Lumb (Sydney Sixers)

Fidel Edwards (Sydney Thunder)

Chris Gayle (Sydney Thunder)

All box office. We're literally into the stratosphere here. Don't let anyone fool you that "superstars" like Kevin Pietersen, Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn, Zaheer Khan, James Anderson and Graeme Swann are where it's at, the BBL is where the real action is. Why watch a Test series of magnitude and meaning like the Border-Gavaskar trophy, when you can watch history being made in front of your eyes?

The eagle-eyed amongst you will have spotted that there are still 3 overseas slots to fill - plenty of time for the competition to attract even more star names such as Ravi Bopara, Upul Tharanga and Chris Tavare. Unbelievable as it sounds, this competition could get even bigger and better between now and when it all kicks off!

Some appalling overseas players there
Yeah. In a couple of the cases I'm not convinced they should even be guaranteed selections for their teams, although the two extra teams does spread the talent a little thinner.

At least no-one picked up Saj this season.

Notwithstanding the thoroughly erroneous use of talent, surely when Australian stocks are so low as they are as present, diluting them even further is a questionable initiative at the very best?

Well, it depends.

An argument could be made to suggest that there are a large number of players of very similar talents in Australia at the moment and the lack of teams merely limits the number of those players who can be properly coached and developed. The best players could theoretically go undiscovered, particularly if the state selectors are as bad as the national ones (and in some cases they definitely are). One could also mount a case to suggest that there are better players in Sydney First Grade and Victorian Premier Cricket than some of the blokes playing in the Shield at the moment because no-one wants to live in Adelaide.

In the end though this is a T20 competition and not really designed to develop cricketers; it's a promotional tournament.

As does the lack of any of Australia's best players for most of the duration of the tournament. Genius marketing strategy that.

The Australian captain has effectively said the tournament's a waste of time; as has Mitchell Johnson, who, regardless of what you think of his abilities, is one of the biggest names at the moment in Australian cricket. Ironically, Warner's early season form for NSW and the potential spot that might open up for him means that the tournament might have to do without Australia's biggest name in T20 cricket. The market researchers responsible for this tournament must be laughing all the way to the bank.
