Australian Cricketers Rankings

Ford_GTHO351

U19 Vice-Captain
I have developed a ranking system for the Australian Cricket Players this year for both Tests & ODI's (updated after every game Australia plays). It revolves around points obtained through my criteria, my criteria just does not revolve around runs scored or wickets taken, but it also takes into account other factors such as batters strike rates, bowlers economy, number of madiens a bowler has bowled, not outs by batsmen etc. Here are my rankings to date this year. Feel free to agree or disagree with them. There are some suprises, though some players are further down the rankings then they should be due to injuries obtained this year etc.

Before commenting, I should like to see the criteria you are using.
Obviously 'trips to the chemist' aren't involved because Warney hasn't any points.

<quack> Warney is definitely 'old and busted' now - hence his 'setting the record straight' interview. Although, in Warney's case, hilarity is but a phone call or a weather forecast away.

At the moment, Rikki is 'teh new hotness', but Brad Williams could well come into the frame for ridicule alongside his namesakes GLA (Greatest-living Australian) Hogg and Cheaty.

Can he throw? What does Cameraman Joe think about him?

Fair comment - in which case, we can just look upon it as opinion.

For instance, consider the following bowlers...

Walsh
Warne
Muralitharan
Cork
McGrath
Marshall
Trueman
Gibbs
Clarke
Underwood

I too have applied a formula based upon their test records and come up with the following sequence :

Malcolm Marshall 114.72
Derek Underwood 111.79
Glenn McGrath 109.30
Shane Warne 108.15
Courtney Walsh 102.32
Rikki Clarke 101.18
Dominic Cork 101.05
Muttiah Muralitharan 99.98
Fred Trueman 95.66
Lance Gibbs 92.79

Amazing, eh? Rikki Clarke is ahead of Muttiah Muralitharan.

However, even when I tell you that the table is deternined from the age of their first test victim on the day they took their first wicket (in days, divided by 100 so it has decimal points and therefore looks as though a complex algorithm has been used and some mug might accept it), it's still as valid as yours. :P

Only joking. Welcome to Cricket Web

Only I know. For one it keeps people in suspense (and interested) wondering who is no.1 in my rankings etc.

luckyeddie, In regards to your formula, you should of also (after dividing by 100) square root the numbers. Then you'll probablly get some long complicated decimal number :P

Nah, just kidding, thanks for the welcome.

One of the reasons Ian Harvey is No.5 in the rankings is that he has bowled more than say for example Jason Gillespie (due to Gillespie being injured) who is No.6, this means that Harvey has more opportunities to rank higher in the rankings. Harvey has also put in some good bowling performances to be fair. Though if you take the avg. number of points per innings into account, then you could assume that if Gillespie wasn't injured, he would more than likely be ahead of Harvey. Also if Bracken continues to perform like he is in India right now, he should overtake Harvey in the bowling rankings, unless Harvey puts in some more good bowling performances (thats if he gets to play).

Clarke is only 2 points behind Shane Watson. He has jumped two places and his avg. points per innings (bowling) has gone up by 35.83 :wow:

It will be interesting to see if Andy Bichel will overtake Brett Lee to become (by my ratings) Australia's No.1 ODI bowler for 2003. Though if think Lee will still be No.1 as Bichel has only a few ODI's left to catch Lee and Bichel has been a little quiet in his recent ODI bowling performances. If Lee is No.1 for 2003, it would be even more remarkable as he is missing the entire Tri-series in India due to injury, yet still had a big enough lead prior to the rest of the Australians leaving to go to India to stay No.1.

Clarke has a higher bowling average than McGrath. This suggests a flaw to me.
Well if you take into account that Michael Clarke (139@46.33) has only bowled in three innings this year, it wouldn't be fair to compare Clarkes average with Glenn McGrath's. McGrath (877@46.15) has on the other hand bowled in 19 innings this year. To be fair to McGrath, he has bowled with injuries which would have not helped his bowling performances and this also would of then hurt his average.
