Jadeja gets a triple century. Wowee.

Believe it or not, I have been supporting Jadeja a lot during his tough times in India colours when all my friends here were scolding him. I hope he comes good and prove that he belongs.

I'm still not supportive of Jadeja. He's a powered-down, young, flat-and-slow-bowling version of Abhishek Nayar (or Rajat Bhatia), but just lucky and well-supported by higher-ups, and doesn't really add much to the team. Besides, Orissa is not a title contender (more a relegation contender) and the pitch is flat. There are better players than him who have been lost due to poor management, and it's only a matter of time until he's found way out of his depth at the top level, once the Indians face the Aussies or even the crisis-stricken, yet flamboyant Windies.

RP Singh took five wickets as he and Bhuv Kumar scythed through the Punjab lower order. From 329/5, they slumped to 350, with both Harbhajan and Bipul out for zeroes (also Gony). Harbhajan went wicketless, while Raina is just in and Kaif was out after fifty, in the sixties. The fielding of UP was shoddy as usual, and while the Punjab tail is hardly weak, they played too many poor shots in a row to give their wickets away to largely stationary fielders off slightly-faster-than-medium deliveries that moved a little.

The Mumbai and Karnataka games look to be one of the few that will have a result, along with possibly Delhi.

Seems to be a lot of teams that are banking on first innings points this round.

The pitches will start to wear as the season goes on though. Bengal vs Gujarat seems to be particularly flat.

He's got an average over 57, more centuries than fifties, and is barely touched by the vices of the IPL, sticking to the grind of Ranji and Duleep Trophy. While I wouldn't put him in the XI, he should surely shoot in ahead of those bonus wicketkeepers, none of whom are even half the batsman he is. His fielding is also a huge plus, and even though he can't make the XI, he can still be useful as a sub. Besides, a whole lot of new internationals seem to go the distance despite suspect technique, which is a very common malady in Indian domestic players. Pujara and Rahane included.

Don't see how you can replace a backup wicket keeper with a batsman in the squad?

In any case, there are quite a few other batsman ahead of him. Has shown not much so far to show that he is ready to take the next step.

Hopefully at the current point in time, it is now apparent that Sreesanth is not a good bowler in the red ball format of the game.

I do not doubt that possibility. But if we are being tentative and treating the selectors like morons, it can be said that he is prone to produce sub-FC standard spells up until as recently as yesterday, in the red ball format of the game.

So out of 13 games played, only 2 gets a result, rest are draws. Seems like all were mostly flat pitches, no wonder most batsmen in domestic cricket averages more than 50

Yeah it's really annoying. It becomes really hard to differentiate the domestic bullies from the cricketers we should be looking at to be in national contention. Beyond an average of 50 or so, comparing the averages is pretty meaningless.

Should remove the first innings rule first and maybe make the matches 5 days, instead of the four.

With the first innings rule teams are hesitant to declare in first innings too and pace their innings in such a way as to ensure they get FIP's too.

The first innings rule needs to go. They could replace it with a rule that rewards teams for picking 20 wickets instead.

Here is a suggestion to reduce the no. of draws & promote more attacking cricket in the Ranji trophy. Hope the BCCI follows it

Just remove the points awarded for draws & get rid of the 1st innings lead rule. That rule is leading to 500+ scores by both teams in the 1st innings & the matches being decided on the basis of 1st innings leads

Have a new system where

Wins = 2 points
Draw = 0 points
Loss = 0 points

With both draws & losses giving 0 points, teams will be forced to be more aggressive & look to play out for wins. Hope that someone from the BCCI reads this post & implements this

Maybe we can start an online petition to remove the first-innings lead? With bonus points for more comprehensive wins, like an innings? It's an abomination, truly and surely. We've seen a team become champions by first-innings-lead in the finals in one season, and then get relegated because of that rule, while in that same second season, a team that lost more matches (and won as many) stayed.

None of the bowling performances have been particularly inspiring either, bar RP Singh in the first innings, who did nothing in the second phase. No all-rounder has had a good first round, with the best being Rajat Bhatia and Sachin Rana, neither of whom look like setting the charts on fire. The ones who can, the Pathans and Ashwin, were missing in action- the Baroda/TN game was washed out, and Ashwin was on national duty.

It's a shame that we didn't get proper play in the Baroda-TN game. Yet again, the retreating monsoon wins the MOTM in a Chennai game scheduled in the Oct-Nov time!

Two surprises for me - one pleasant, one not so much. Jadeja scoring a triple century, even though the attack wasn't the most lethal. And Siddharth Trivedi turning up for the Saurashtrians! When and how the hell did that happen?

Baroda is a strong contender for the Trophy. With the Pathans, Munaf and Rayudu, as well as Kedar Devdhar and Bharghav Bhatt, they've got a strong combination that can take them to the finals. They still have to compete with Mumbai, who put up strong teams without their India stars, though now Rahane being on national duty puts them back a little. Karnataka will also stand a chance, with Vinay Kumar and Aravind likely to last the entire season, with Uthappa and Pandey.

Elsewhere, Goa took a bold step in dropping Swapnil Asnodkar, their captain this season, for two matches, because he aborted the 130-run chase needed in 20 overs. Goa took the appropriate step of opening with a T20-ready batsman instead of their regular opener, following up at three with a hard hitter. Yet, six overs out and 18 scored, Asnodkar called off the chase.

It's good that Goa have displayed intent in winning a game, and other associations and IPL franchises (and also the national team) should take note. While losing a player like him (Goa is very short of cricketing talent) will impact the side adversely (lose both matches?), this is not a team that wins much, so they have virtually nothing to lose. Moreover, despite the lower standard of cricket in the Plate league, the teams compete fiercely, which is missing in the Elite league, where teams just try to rake up the runs and wear out the opposition batting...a little sooner.

Ravindra Jadeja? Yeah, He didnt take many wickets but then a triple is big, though it came on a flat track.
