Athlai thinks Ewen Chatfield is a better bowler than Chris Cairns. I call troll, but he wants to put it to CW so since I'm nice and democratic...

His main argument seems to be along FC lines. Chatfield's FC record is freakish, and he averages 19 in NZ. Athlai will probably say his bit.

Chatfield was a gun and is probably underappreciated when compared to his bowling partner, but I don't think he is better than Cairns.

First class records:
587 @ 22.87 for Chats
647 @ 28.31 for Cairns

Please note that this exercise is also to see who is the best player in NZ as well, against NZers too.

You clearly said Chats was the better bowler, not the better bowler in NZ.:p

ODI or Test?

Chatfield was comfortably the better ODI bowler and Cairns the better test bowler

Chatfield played 3-day cricket when things like this happened. ("150 up, let's declare eh?")

Meanwhile a not inconsiderable portion of Cairns' FC record is in England.

Not really sure how matches like that would necessarily devalue the wickets he took. If anything it would present more matches where you don't get a shot at 20 wickets because of the greater likelihood of draws/declarations.

Cairns FC wickets in NZ domestic cricket:
120 @ 24.75

Chats:
403 @ 18.68

Nice thread makes a difference from Glen McGrath vs X

Can't believe how economical Chatfield was - Cairns' SR is vastly superior - the only thing that is keeping their test averages close is Chatfield's miserliness. Since wicket taking is what really matters in tests (as long as you are not going for 4 an over) I think the SR is more important here than average.

Perhaps Athlai can post Chats and Cairns' econ rates and SRs for FC so we can compare those as well.
