South Africa Domestic Season 2011/12

Won CSA u15 player of the year, two years in a row. A bit perplexed how he didn't make the SA colts team (2nd side to SA Schools) at least as he was in the top 10 run scorers. But he is in the SA u19 pipeline and goes to the training camps already. Just got sponsored by MAXED along with David Bedingham (player ahead of him in list). New cricket equipment sponsors...Morne Van Wyk of the Knights uses MAXED.

Cobras fan. :)
Pretty brilliant by him tbh.

Yeah I've heard of MAXED, whisper it quietly but its basically Mr Price Sports' brand
I've been looking for a new bat recently, saw a Maxed LE for R899, got a B&S Fireblade in the end but now that I've been swinging it around inside, it feels pretty heavy! Supposedly Grade 1 willow (I read somewhere) so hopefully the power should make up for the weight :) Would love to try out that Maxed though., out of interest if nothing else.

B & S and DP have been brilliant SA cricket brands over the years until eventually our younger players move on the bigger and better things with Gray-Nicolls, GM or Kookaburra.

Got to say, I haven't tried a MAXED yet but I did try a Fireblade a few years ago and it was decent. Liked the grain on it and it had a good feel but I was happy with my DP and Gray-Nicolls.

Yeah, DP was also a bat I considered, hopefully this Fireblade will impress me!

A lot of people putting their hands up from our domestic scene recently. Hope we send an 'A' side to England when the main side tours there. It would be good for them to have an 'A' tour to somewhere other than sub-continent as well and they will be ready to go if called upon for an injury in the main squad.

Good article with Dean Elgar (potentially a future SA test opener and captain)

Elgar striving for SA call-up

Dean Elgar tends to overdo things.

09 December 2011 | HEINZ SCHENK

JOHANNESBURG - Dean Elgar tends to overdo things.

“When he was about 18 he reported for a national Under-19 camp. The problem was that he was almost 10kg overweight so we sent him away to work on his body,” reminisced current Proteas assistant coach Russell Domingo, who’s dealt with the Knights’ lynchpin at youth and ‘A’ level.

“Dean came back after a while looking much leaner but he’d overdone it a bit. Now he was almost 5kg underweight!”

At least it’s one of the left-hander’s most endearing qualities.

“He has this steely determination and great work ethic. That’s why he’s been able to express his talents so well these past few years. Many players don’t have the correct mindset to go with their innate abilities,” said Domingo.

Yet back in 2006, the future looked distinctly uncertain for Elgar and his national Under-19 lieutenants.

They had made the trek to Sri Lanka for the World Cup but some wildly capricious form saw them finish a poor 11th overall, the nadir being an agonising two-run defeat to lightweights Nepal in a plate semifinal.

Elgar finished with an unbeaten 66 in that match – and 246 runs at 61,50 in the tournament – but little credit ended up his way, let alone the team.

As the 24-year-old from a small private school called St Dominic’s in Welkom noted, that reverse had implications on their young careers.

“We were so inexperienced at that stage and really didn’t know how to handle this disappointment,” admitted Elgar.

“The cricketing fraternity tends to remember specific vintages. Two seasons before us AB de Villiers, JP Duminy and those guys swept everything before them as an Under-19 side. After us Wayne Parnell’s side reached the final of the World Cup. These were the guys people were talking about as the future stars.”

Indeed, at face value the prospects of a group that can’t even break into the top-10 at a showpiece aren’t considered rosy.

Elgar, with high standards drilled into him at a young age as well as a dash of healthy competition from his older brother, would be damned though if he subscribed to mediocrity after that disappointment.

“Never did I feel that my team-mates and I would eventually fall by the wayside. We actually were a side with big names but we just lacked the proper attitude to work hard,” he said.

“In fact, that World Cup probably made us realise the value of putting in the hard yards, especially since we would’ve needed to put in extra because we lost a bit of our credibility so to speak. Now most of my mates like Craig Alexander, Richard Levi, Jean Symes and Malusi Siboto are established players. Craig Kieswetter plays for England!”

Not that he’s averse to toiling hard.

As a schoolboy, Elgar credits former Free State off-spinner Louis Klopper as an integral part of his development.

“I came from a very small school and it was important to have a coach that’s passionate and insightful about the game. He played senior provincial cricket so he’s got good knowledge.”

The dusty mine town, however, simply isn’t the milieu for ambitious cricketers to spread their wings and after starting to play senior club cricket in grade eight, he expanded his horizons two years later by participating in the Bloemfontein club system.

“It was that real laaitie against men stuff,” chirped Elgar.

“But I’m glad I did it. It introduced me to the more rigorous aspects of the game and made up for me not going to a traditional cricketing nursery.”

All that has contributed to him making a rapid ascension in the South African playing hierarchy in the past few years, prompting national selector Vinnie Barnes to comment that he’s “pushing hard for a place” in the Proteas side.

Admitting that he favours the responsibility of opening an innings, which he does in four-day cricket, Elgar might find his bread properly buttered there in the national set-up given the struggles to find a partner for Graeme Smith in Tests – even though there’s a queue. But Domingo believes his profitable One-Day Cup campaign – 567 runs at 70,87 – enhances his claims to a spot in the middle-order as well.

“It’s interesting that he bats in different positions in the different formats. I think a spot for him in the middle-order of a side is good as he finds the gaps well and runs nippily,” he remarked.

“If anything, he lacks the power-hitting game required when batting at six but anything higher suits him well. He’s really knocking on the door.”
A reasonably unexplored aspect of Elgar’s game remains his leadership.

Articulate and a keen thinker, he’s already skippered South Africa ‘A’ on 2010’s tour to Sri Lanka and unlike other reluctant candidates is quite keen for such a role.

“I actually would really like to be a captain. It’s a responsibility I truly enjoy.”

That certainly thickens the plot.

Simon Harmer has nice stats. Anyone seen him play? Does he look like stepping up? Also i wish that Obus Pienaar could bowl a alot more than his doing now, it would aid his cause to be in the One day team at the very least.

Yeah, saw Harmer in the One-Day Cup final. Very decent. Attacking offie with some nice flight and spin. Done the hard yards in that he wasn't identified at u19 level but through 3 to 4 good years in club cricket and even had to move from Pretoria to PE club cricket.

Obus to me bowls a bit of powder puff seamers at about 120-125kmph. Good ball striker though with the bat in hand.

Quite poor how the Lions aren't playing Quinton De Kock and keeping Tsolekile or even Bavuma in the team.

Is there any black cricketer that you think will step up to international cricket? And i dont mean coloured players.@SeamUp?

Obviously Tsotsobe is the best of the bunch at the moment.

There was a big hope for Mangi Mosehle at the Titans but eventhough he looks good at the crease, he cannot turn it into enough runs. Decent gloveman though.

Zondeki, Mpitsang and Mbhalati are all falling off the domestic radar as well now so new black players are in the mix.

Probably the most hope for is Pumelela Matshikwe but he is well down the list in fast bowling department. He has a lot going for him with his height and high arm action but he could get some more pace with the build he has. Him along with Bavuma and Shezi of Dolphins were in the last emerging players tournament.

There is a player Lesiba Ngoepe who will be in the SA u19 squad who has potential and does score loads of runs at junior level and bowls decent left-arm spin. Played for Easterns already.

well it seems there are no batsmen just bowlers. Matshikwe is not gona get international batsmen out. Once upon a time i heard that Mosehle was destroying the youth bowlers. Jet jennings rates him highly. Perhaps the Titans must use kuhn as an opener and let Mosehle keep. I just think kuhn has a better chance of making it as an opener. Averages over 40 does kuhn as far as i know.

The Titans have always had such problems to find balance with 4 players of colour having to be selected for every game and one should be 'black' scenario.

It will take a lot to get the gloves off Kuhn as thats his hope to get international recognition but I would rather play Mosehle than this Bodibe they are playing in the 4-day staff currently.

But that to me won't help Mosehle playing for South Africa because Quinton De Kock is the real deal and should be South Africa's next keeper. But I wouldn't be disappointed if Kuhn or Smit got a chance first. Smit is easily the best glovesman in the country with Bouch and has worked hard on his batting.

In the Titans set-up I feel for someone like Pieter Malan who has so much talent but yet cannot get near a Titans team regularly enough and there others in the Northerns amateur team as well like Francois Le Clus, Josh Richards, David Bunn, Douglas Hewitt and Christiaan Schoeman that would be closer to franchise cricket of there were at other franchises.

just took a peek at De kocks stats and all il say is that he is a talent. He averages 46 at amatuer level and he is just 19. Surerly he is better than Tsolekile? Infact he could make it sorely as a batsmen. By the way whats happening to vandiar? He seems to be going the way of vaughn van jaarsveld. Unfulfilled talent.

Jonathan Vandiar has really disappointed me. Ooozes potential and I think work ethic has let him down but also not having the ability to know how to build a long innings as he wants to dominate too much. Limited overs cricket and potentially ODI will be his lot. His hand sppeed has always been a delight to watch when he does well.

That 2008 WC team was pretty decent when you think of the batting line-up and they're playing franchise cricket tdoay

Pieter Malan
JJ Smuts
Rilee Rossouw
Reeza Hendricks
Jonathan Vandiar
Yaseen Vallie
Obus Pienaar
Wayne Parnell

Out of interest, SeamUp, do you back Alviro or Rudolph higher?

As an aside, I've just finished a blog post entitled "The Keeper Conundrum" International Cricket Blog - it is obviously surrounding the uncertainty among the fans regarding Boucher's position in the Test team - opinions on the whole saga? Do you think that de Kock is anywhere near ready for a spot in the Test team?

Alviro Petersen couldn't get anywhere near the Titans team a few years ago and Rudolph has walked into the Titans team since he was 18/19. So Petersen had to leave to go to the Lions. I have always been a Rudolph fan since I saw him at 18.

Alviro initially had a problem where he was a walking LBW waiting to happen but he has worked hard to overcome that and overcome the getting out after a start...especially at domestic level. But in his short test career the getting out after a start continued for him.

So it was a no contest until about 2 to 3 years ago.

So tbh...whatever happens here and who deserves there place should get it. At the moment its 50-50 for me but I have followed Dean Elgar's career very closely since his u19 days and he is ready...so if the two senior players can't nail down their positions...he is there.

Quite simply Boucher must stay in the team at least until the England tour. He got a good ball in the first innings but I still believe he is the man for the job for now.

De Kock must be starting regularly for the Lions but for some reason the the stupid Lions staff are dropping the wrong people and playing the wrong people. It seems whatever Vandiar does he cannot get dropped, Bavuma?? really? Tsolekile??? really?

Yeah I'd like to see a fresh face in - haven't seen Elgar bat but his record makes me think he could do a job.
I just find that Peterson looks like a solid franchise player, nothing more. I would like to see Elgar in for Smith (he needs to get some runs under his belt at franchise level) and possibly Heino Kuhn in for Rudolph. Call me crazy, but we need to do something, and this putting Kuhn in would also allow us to field an extra specialist batsman at 7 - and our batting needs all the help it can get!

Fair enough. Thats your decision, mate. So its not crazy.

But to me, its too drastic. Rudolph, Prince, Boucher, Morkel and Tahir are the players under pressure.

Smith has got a 100 against Australia this summer and got 60 in the last test match. Test openers won't score runs all the time and this summer he has done fair enough and is our test skipper.

If they do decide to drop Rudolph and Prince. I would be tempted to give Alviro one last chance to open and bat Elgar at 6 to bring him in steadily.
