I think this a great side, maybe missing a quality leg spinner, but otherwise top notch

Did you forget Bradman? How can you justify the selection of Gooch over dozens of considerably more successful opening batsmen from Hobbs to Hayden.
DOH!
talk about a major gaffe and leaving out Bradman !!
I guess Waugh/Dravid gets the boot and Bradman gets the red carpet in that lineup.

As per why Gooch, it was another Gaffe ! Gooch gets chucked and Boycott comes in!

Whatever it takes!!!
Sunil Gavaskar 203 9607 50.29 33/42
2 Geoffrey Boycott 191 8091 48.16 22/42
3 Rahul Dravid 118 6463 62.14 17/31
4 Sachin Tendulkar 157 8251 59.78 29/32
5 Steve Waugh 142 6754 56.28 24/29
6 Steve Waugh 79 3165 51.04 6/16
7 Adam Gilchrist 79 3377 51.16 11/13
8 Kapil Dev 58 1777 33.52 2/11
9 Curtly Ambrose 97 973 12.01 0/1
10 Waqar Younis 48 496 11.80 0/0
11 Glenn McGrath 117 556 7.61 0/1

How is that side? These are the batsmen with most runs in their respective positions according to Cricinfo. That side will do pretty well, won't they, atleast with the bat.

Edit: Juz realized that Steve Waugh figures twice. Replace him with Lara.

I was amazed that Steve has the record for both places, but I guess there haven't been all that many players who have played enough to contend with him for the number 6 spot

yeah, most batsmen debut at no.6 but seem to work their way up the order after few good performances and then stay there. Not many settled no.6s in the world, I guess.

How does someone with no centuries or 5 wicket hauls and an average the wrong side of 30 in both categories manage to get into an All Time World XI?

His bowling average is below 30 in ODIs (and tests, for that matter)

Finally some sense from an Aussie ;)

To put him in now would be unfair to Rodney Marsh who was consistently for over a decade whereas Gilchrist has been consistent for about 2 years.

i don't think so

i reckon he's gotten worse over the past year or so...keeping wise.

besides, keepers nowadays are meant to be good batsmen, thats where Adam would excel.

I am creating a database for ICC which will include the all time XI's for each country.

Now Im sure you've had a thread on this before (we certainly had a few on the Cricinfo forums) but I was wondering what you guys reckon some of these teams should look like??

So what are you're all time XI's for a country of you're choice??

My Australian one is something like-
1.B.Lawry
2.B.Simpson
3.*D.Bradman
4.G.Chappell
5.N.Harvey
6.K.Miller
7.+A.Gilchrist
8.R.Lindwall
9.S.Warne
10.C.Grimmet
11.D.Lillee
Six years later who would be in and who would out? (assuming the OP hasn't been disfigured in a freak yachting accident.)

Good side, but four worldclass pacers is a bit overkill. Would put Lara instead of Akram, prefer Murali ahead of Warne but either spinner works.

Today, this works for me as an All-Time XI. Tomorrow, I may change my mind.

Some interesting arguments among numbers 8-11 about who bats where.
For me:

Akram
Hadlee
Warne
Marshall

But you could slice it pretty much any way you wish.

Nah, Hadlee was a better test bat than Akram, the guy average over 30 in the second half on his career whereas Wasim just had than one big double against Zim

I think Marshall was a marginally better test bat than Warne too, but not so sure of that battle

Yep, quite happy with Hadlee at 8. I suppose Wasim/Hadlee and Warne/Marshall are pretty much interchangeable. Pretty handy having a lower order like this, given the quality of the upper and middle order, and the bowling.
