Heroic in the face of a hammering

International Captain
Ravi Shastri in the ODI series vs Pak in 1987 (before the World Cup ). Scored 3 fifties, claimed one 4-fer and 3-fer, won the MoS award, yet lost the series 1-5.

State Vice-Captain
Ryan Harris in the recent series was just outstanding, it shows why a lot of times you just have to rate a performance by its quality rather than putting too much emphasis on the final result, even though Aus didnt end up winning.. Harris was easily the best bowler of the series.

Dunno if Harris counts, the series was closer than 3-0 suggests.

Still very good mind you. Particularly given the inconsistency of other bowlers.

Bradman against Bodyline
In the famous 1932/33 series Bradman may have averaged only marginally better than half his career average of 99.94. But Bradman still managed to average over 56 runs per innings - the best by an Australian and second only to Eddie Paynter's 61.

Why are people still debating this, karan316 already gave us the answer with Yusuf Pathan's 59 and 105 against South Africa in a ODI series.

Chris Cairns was pretty magnificent against Australia in 2000. Topped the run charts from both teams to finish with 341 at an average of 57 (also grabbed 10 wickets to round things off). The next best for New Zealand was Craig McMillan with 194 at 32.

Also Andy Flower in the 2001 test v SA, when he scored 341 runs in the match to just allow Zim to avoid an innings defeat.
