Is Butler in the OD squad - I can't remember & what is the prognosis re his injury? Also how is Oram's injury / problem - will he bit fit for selection?

IMO NZ has the advantage re current form with so many players backing up from the Test series in good form - Vincent, Styris, McMillan, Vettori, Tuffey. I'm a bit concerned regarding that we may go into the series a batsman short with Astle out, unless they decide to open with someone other than Vincent (which would be a mistake).

While Australia had a comfortable series win over Zimbabwe, I question their attack going into the series on these flatter tracks. Similarly it is so early in the season here that the ODI specialists have not had any cricket since the Bangladesh series. I know the NZ season has not got under way but their Test players are well settled & acclimatised to the pitches & weather, which should compensate a bit.

India need a far better showing in this series to regain some confidence; & Australia will still back their ability to win anywhere & will want to further demoralise India ahead of the Test series.

Australia & India have more to play for IMO which may be the deciding factor in which team qualifies.

Super bowler. Not just as penetrative as McGrath and Gillespie on green or uneven wickets but could bowl reverse-swing too. Offered a bit more penetration of his own than most. A bit unlucky to fail to earn selection in the 2001 Ashes.

We still depend a lot on Tendulkar in any tournament as seen in the WC, the preliminary rounds of the Natwest....besides, Ganguly is not in the team for the first 2 matches, that makes it all the more important that Sachin should shine. The difference I have seen is that there is still fight left in this team even when Sachin gets out, but given his impressive record against Australia in one dayers, he will be the dangerman for them once again.

As an Australian i think it is time for at least 2 of the aussies to step up.
Jimmy Maher- was dropped for the West Indies and has been given a second go with leahman out. Really needs a 100 or something.

Ian Harvey- One of my favourites but needs to bowl really well with the injurys.

Thoughts on these two.

He was injured, something which has become commonplace for him. It's why he's not playing now which is a shame because I agree, he was a very solid swing bowler who could bowl with some pace on occasions.

Well the news is that India have won the toss & will bat...interestingly they've dropped Dravid as keeper & brought in Pathiv Patel.

Actually the reason he isnt playing now is that he retired , yes due to injuries.

Really its a shame he got injured in 1999/00 because he let Brett Lee establish himself & there was really no way back for him after that.

I agree with you 2 though , he was a very under-rated bowler & if he was born in any other country & had a little more luck with injuries he could have been something really special.

It looks very very dark out there...I think its going to bucket down sooner or later.

NZ have done alright to take 3 wickets, the boundaries are extremely small & the pitch is a belter so India should be looking at about 280+ I reckon.

I guess it's because he's captaining and they didn't want too big a burden on him?

And I would extend that to Andrew Symonds too. He has to show that his form in the World Cup was not a fluke (I'm sure that there are people out there with that opinion).

Can't say too much about Maher, but he does need runs to stay in the team. If not, he will just end up being a replacement while Lehmann is out.

I agree with Harvey as well. He looks like a world beater at ING Cup level, but can sometimes be found wanting at the international level. I would rely on him more for his bowling - he is pretty good at the death with his accuracy and mix of pace. But his batting is very hot and cold.

If Shane Watson comes back into the team at anytime, it could very well be at Harvey's expense. I think it is time for Ian to stand up and be counted... on his day, he's one of the best all rounders in the world.

Yeah Watson, not a huge wrap for him. He just seems like he hasn't earnt a spot. Saw him bat today in the ING cup Vs Queensland, not good. And well we know about his back and all. Agree on the Symonds point too.

I'd say it's a real possibility. Especially when Ganguly comes back.
