Aussie's name hots up Wellington coaching job | Stuff.co.nz

"We are going to head home for a couple of months but the job at Wellington does interest me.

"I only put my CV in with Wellington about three or four days ago.
I can imagine this will excite Athlai somewhat :p

Vaughan Johnson is back as Otago coach. Never impressed me too much when I got coaching from him back in the early-mid 1990s, but his actual record is very strong, and it's good to have another local fella taking the reins again.

He was upper hutts coach for a while. He watched me bowl - but walked away after I bowled two loose ones in a row. They were just marginally loose as well.

My other memory is me fending off a nasty delivery from my throat and him asking me if I was ok in the nets or did I want to come out of there. Which was very kind of him to look after my welfare. I said I would be ok in there.
The first team bowlers took it easy on me after that delivery however and pitched them up.

Last memory is there was a kid in the third team for batting. Vaughn took one look at him bowl - and 2 months later he was opening the bowling for the firsts. Took 30 wickets in Wellington's premier division the next season which aint bad going.. (story slightly embellished)

Ian O'Brien back to play for Wellington and possibly NZ. Man if he does make it back to NZ and can play at his old form - we would have a chance of beating aussie maybe - or at least drawing a game.

Mccullum
Guptil
Williamsom
Taylor
Ryder
Someone
Young
Vettori
Southee
OBrien
Martin

Also Vettori - to only play tests for the forseeable future - says that he wants to preserve his body. But will he play list A stuff instead which is presumably just as taxing - or will he just play FC for ND.

It's a bit hard to see our opening bowlers being 35 and nearly 37 tbh. He should never have left when he did.

Worthwhile seeing how O'Brien actually fares for Wellington before discussing his chances of a national recall IMO - 18 months out of the international game, of which hes probably spent more time on Test Match Sofa than actually playing for Middlesex (if I recall correctly he only played 10 or so matches for them). Throw in his age too, and although I like the guy I have some reservations about him playing for NZ again - after all I doubt he has more than a year or two of high intensity cricket left in him.

Heard Richardson mention that on crowd goes wild.
I'm quite glad that he's back. I hope he's still relatively quick.

Got an interesting email from SKY asking me to fill in a survey about a new sports channel. Not sure if the link will work here for non-Sky subscribers, but worth posting, in case anyone else can fill it out.

Looks like they'll be getting feeds of live games in India and preview/review shows along with magazine-style shows, as well as potentially some Aussie and NZ first-class cricket. I suggested to them the more tests they could get on board from overseas, the better.

I would be keen to watch county cricket but wouldn't want to watch Aussie FC. Would find it frustrating to watch how many good players they have compared to us. Would pay an extra $15 a month to watch NZ FC cricket however.

well to answer that we'd have to know where in the 20 players he is ranked which we don't know.

I see Corey Anderson has signed with ND. Cant see why Lee germon is surprised, they didn't offer him a contract because he has been injured a lot the last 3 seasons. No contract means no faith in his ability to perform this season. Either they keep investing in him or they dont.

Chewie

International Vice-Captain
He'd have to be at the top of that list now, wouldn't he?
Not necessarily, your captain doesn't have to be your best player. Having said that I'd imagine he'd probably be there at the top. No idea what that pay is though

Ross Taylor always had his eye on top job | Stuff.co.nz

Found it

"Soon to be New Zealand's highest-paid player [base salary $177,000, captain's bonus, $50,000, plus match fees]"

Sounds like his total package just from NZC would be like $300 000 including match fees?

I wanted to find this stat because I would like to make the point that the Blackcaps captain is underpaid. His job is just as complex as a CEO - he has to do media and PR and lead some potentially challenging people. Should be making a $1M - not to mention the fact that if he performs he generates millions of dollars in terms of social good.
