Anyone following this?

The 3 day matches are underway -

Indian and SA played out a tense draw with India just needing 4 more runs to win before the play was called off (After a blistering century by Rahane(WAG!!!)-

India Emerging Players v South Africa Emerging Players at Brisbane, Aug 1-3, 2011 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

Similar match between NZ A and Australian institute of sports too -

Australian Institute of Sport v New Zealand A at Brisbane, Aug 1-3, 2011 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

Yeah, just saw the NZ A thread.

But still can't discuss Indian players there and there are no threads for SA right now too.

So stupid that bad light was not offered to the batsmen instead of calling it off..

Good stuff from India Emerging Players. Vinay Kumar has performed well in this tournament. Perhaps this could be his breakthrough to the Test setup. Especially if he can get some more wickets in the third game.

India end up winning the match. Interesting to see Vinay Kumar doing well in Australia, imo.

Also Australia just about manage to draw with SA . Reeza Hendricks with a Double century and Obus Pienaar with a 5fer.
Good to see Obus bowling again but that Aus side is Mickey Mouse. Most of them have not even played Kentucky ****y cricket in Aus, let alone a Shield game.

NZ and India are taking it pretty seriously though. They both have test cricketers playing.

The Indian team is fielding three token reserves- Vinay Kumar, Shikhar Dhawan and Manoj Tiwary, all of whom have had adequate A-team or domestic experience or both. It's working in their favour.

While it's good to see Vinay Kumar chipping away, he's the experienced player, so he's expected to outperform all the young boys in all the teams, his own included. Moreover, while India have scalped twenty wickets often, it's been largely shared between five bowlers, making good use of the twelve-a-side format. Each time, one has been a lot less emphatic. Vinay shouldn't be playing this grade of cricket any further- put him into the first reserves and keep him in line for a national call-up. A good replacement for Zaheer.

That Aussie side is essentially an academy team, and two of those players are from India, doing a course/module at the Australian Institute of Sport- what the name of the team itself says!

India Emerging Vs Australian Institute of Sport is currently being played. AIS bowled out for 205. One may posit that it is men playing against boys, but the upper order wickets were taken mainly by Unadkat (3/47), who is just 19 years old. The lower order wickets were taken by the genuinely quick Varun Aaron (4/40), who is just 21 years old.

India Emerging are 191/1 with Rahane on 71* and Menaria on 94. Please someone inform me why Rahane is considered an inferior option to Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh. The guy is a run machine who averages 67.72 in FC cricket and it'd be higher if these games were also counted as FC fixtures.

Been harping on about Rahane for ages. Should have easily been picked in some form of the game by now.

Probably needs to change his domestic side because Nohit is regarded as the golden boy in the mumbai circles and all the hype is about him. And Selectors are keen to show impartiality towards Mumbai so they don't select both.

Also interesting Rahane is opening there, when really he isn't a opener.

Just Test cricket, imo. There are better players for ODI cricket who are sitting out, such as Yusuf Pathan and Robin Uthappa, imo.

Don't think it proves too much about his capabilities as an opener either. The main struggle when opening is negotiating the new ball against good bowlers and AIS only seem to have Starc who could be called a good bowler for the level. The others are pretty inexperienced.

He's quite an enigma, Rahane. So what if he's a run-machine in a domestic treadmill? Almost all of his runs have come against weak domestic Indian attacks, when the Indian team is in international action. What should help him is that he's had a good A-team record and he's won titles for Mumbai, which should catapult him way ahead of Pujara, Kohli, Raina, Yuvraj and Tiwary, and level with Badrinath. He'll also complete a golden FC and List-A jubilee this season.

What may go against him is that he can't bowl. That makes him more susceptible to losing his place when in poor form, to another player like him, who may suffer the same fate eventually. Yuvraj has somehow floated around in Test cricket because of his left-arm spin, much as it counts for nothing in a weak bowling side.

Rahane is least wanted in the IPL, so clearly, he's been found wanting by those people. Yes, the IPL is T20, but many of the players who have succeeded are top Test players, and some outside successes (mostly Aussie and South African) have made their careers here. It's a totally different kettle of fish, facing top-level bowlers in a high-pressure event, from facing domestic extras in an event with little to no pressure. Then again, those people happen to have no real knowledge (Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra) or faith (Nita Ambani) in Indian domestic cricket.

More interesting is the choice of Indian players for the AIS. Both of them are residents of India, and are clearly here on a scholarship programme. This is apparently the last one- sadly, as sponsors have pulled out. Once we saw promising young Indian domestic players sent to Australia to further their skills, and the results, particularly with Avishkar Salvi, were good. Then they started sending Brijesh Patel's son, then a whole lot of unknowns. Opportunity lost, maybe? Now though, with more emerging player events, and resumption of A-team tours, things should improve.

Rahane scored a century against South Africa too and almost won the game for India.

Besides Uthappa(who i don't really rate that highly tbh) and Pathan are there for a specific role lower down the order(6/7) and can be used for it only. While Rahane is a more proper batsman.

Uthappa can open as well, tbf. Rahane did score a century against South Africa, but unless he can consistently score runs against good attacks whilst opening, no credence should be given to such a role for him.

Rahane for ODIs is something I would not like to see. I think it could damage his case to be a Test batsmen. Because, as we know, our selectors have the minds of small children.

Whatever it takes!!!
With the amount of cricket we play, it would make more sense to have some specialists around, but of course, as the saying goes right now, it is more difficult to get out of the Indian team than to get in...
