Can Harbhajan break Murali's record?

He's just turned 31.
Given that India are expected to play around 100 tests in the next 8-9 years and that Harby avgs around 4 wickets a test, can he get to 800 if he plays till the age of 39-40?

Kumble took 343 wickets in only 73 tests after turning 31. (spinners tend to get better in their 30s)

Harbhajan Singh's 400 Test wickets: Stats analysis of his achievement | Cricket Features | West Indies v India | ESPN Cricinfo

He's been avging 32 since mar 2008.
144 wickets in 33 tests (4.4 per match) since then.

Its possible I guess. But only if he can manage to play 100 tests before he retires.

But this is not a stat that tells you how good someone is. It's just a total
Not really.

There is a reason why only one bowler has ever got there and only 1/2 others are close.

He would have to mantain his place in the side too even if he carries on till 39/40 which is no guarantee.

Suffices to say there are reasons why bowlers don't play 200 Tests.
India are playing tons of tests in the next 8-9 years. More than 100

he's been avging around 4.4 wickets per match since 08

so even if he plays 90 more tests, he should get there.
Plus, he could have a resurgence?

I wasn;'t aware that he had been aving 32 since 08.
I thought he had performed much worse.

But if he plays long enough (doubt he'll get dropped), surely he can get close?

Even if he did play till till he was 40, presuming he kept at around his career strike rate, he'd have to bowl the same number of balls in 9 years that he did in 13. That's a whole extra four years he's got to fit in somewhere.

Its possible, but improbable. He's likely to finish in the 500-600 region imo, provided he doesn't get dropped, unless he starts bowling really well over the next couple of years. With all that much cricket going around, even as a spinner its hard to see him last till 39/40.

What do you mean he doesn't deserve it? He may be bowling **** now but he's still picked up 400 bloody wickets..

Yeah, don't understand this doesn't deserve it nonsense.

If he has got it ,he certainly deserves it. It's not like he magically got 100 wickets as a donation or something. Has had to earn each one.

No way as it is...

an outside possibility is there...of the 100 test that we are supposed to play if at least 80 is played at home may be he will get close :)
