Bangladesh vs. Zimbabwe

If the 2 sides clashed now - I think we'd have a very close series, but who would win?
What teams are we talking? at full strenght or as they stand right now?

As G.Flower would made a big difference IMO

If at full strenght I think Zimbabwe would just edge it at the moment. H.Streak, G.Flower etc give them the edge and experiance required IMO

A full-strength Zimbabwe might just beat Bangladesh in tests, but the Bangladeshis might win a couple of one dayers....

It's really sad that Zimbabwe who were at one point threatening to break into the ranks of the big boys has now come to this because of politics.....

Thats quite true, and it is a real pity.:( A few years ago Zimbabwe had real promise and the potential to become a good side.

In an ideal world a Zimbabwe XI would probably resemble this...

G. Flower
S. Carlisle/N. Johnson/G. Whittall
M. Goodwin
A. Flower (wk)
A. Campbell
N. Johnson
G. Whittall
H. Streak
P. Strang
A. Blignaut
H. Olonga

Backup players: T. Gripper, C. Wishart, B. Murphy, H. Masakadza, M. Mbangwa, B. Strang, A. Huckle.

Surely there are a few other names which elude my mind currently, but that team looks a whole lot stronger than that which the Aussies are in the process of destroying.

Well you can't deny that they played very, very well against Pakistan.:) Perhaps Bangla can do what Zimbabwe couldn't?

I think they could, but there is a long way to go yet, a very long way.

Yeah its been really awful to see their decline, all down to one man really... If you look at what Zimbabwe should be like now, its actually a very strong team... :(

Oh well I for one really hope they can improve

1.N Johnson
2.G Flower
3.M Goodwin
4.A Flower
5.A Campbell
6.S Carlisle
7.G Whittall
8.H Streak
9.P Strang
10.T Friend
11.H Olonga

I'd forgotten about Travis Friend. Eight Zimbabwean players have retired from international cricket this year and not one of them had reached his expiry date as yet.

That is the problem. What a team they could have had. Not brilliant, but defiately competitive. I personally don't like Johnson, Mark Vermeulen is a really promising player. and that those XIs needn't have Campbell in 'em, because Masakadza has the same average (I think, definately close) and he is younger. My team would have be
H. Masakadza
M. Vermeulen
A. Flower
M. Goodwin
G. Flower
G. Whittall
T. Taibu (Talent)
H. Streak
B. Strang
P. Strang
H. Olonga

If Zimbabwe in their present state played Bangladesh tomorrow Bangladesh would win. If Grant Flower was fit and Ham Masakadza not at Uni Zimbabwe would win.

If you think that those matches have any relevance to what would happen were they to meet tomorrow, then you're misguided.

A few years ago (1999 and 2000) Zimbabwe had something like these sides:
Johnson (how anyone can argue over his ability is a touch mystifying for me, given how good his one-day stats are, and he was a more than capable 10-over bowler too)
G. Flower
Wishart
Campbell
Goodwin
A. Flower
Carlisle
G. Whittall
Streak
Brent \ J. Rennie
Olonga

G. Flower
Gripper \ G. Rennie
Campbell
Goodwin
A. Flower
Johnson
Wishart
Carlisle
G. Whittall
Streak
Olonga
Back-up: A. Whittall, the Strangs, Gripper, Nkala, Mbangwa. Soon to come in: Taibu, Blignaut, Friend, Masakadza, Vermuelen, Matsikenyeri. Overrated: Ebrahim, Ervine.

Both of those sides you names look very short on bowling. I wouldn't rely on Johnson as a primary bowler day-in-day-out any more than I would rely on AA.

Whittall wouldn't trouble many batsmen at Test level and Grant Flower is a good ODI bowler, but really an economical Test bowler at best. I don't rate Wishart's bowling.

Surely you need at least one more specialist bowler in each of those teams.

From downright hopeless: Travis Friend.
He's got a very good bowling action and gets good bounce. I think he will improve, he's still young.
