Shankar, however, has had a good try at re-writing history. Not only has he produced identification apparently proving that he was born in 1985, but he has explained his past by suggesting he might have been the youngest Cambridge University captain in history. At the time of writing, even the Cambridge University Cricket website (Cambridge University Cricket Club Home Page) carried that myth.

What an odd story. Not as bad as the Ali Dia saga as Shankar has been on the fringes of first class cricket for a number of years. Not something you would ever expect in professional sport in the current era.

Quite bizarre that his lack of talent in terms of performing competently at the top level was not detected before he appeared in the first XI, especially these days with the supposed enhanced professionalism.

Remember there was a bit of confusion on the WCCC forum where some people read/remembered that he would now be 29 from a spell in our 2nd XI in 2003. Bit weird.


wiki! At the age of 12, Shankar represented the Ukraine in the Long Jump at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, recording a PB of 7.64 metres. He failed to progress to the finals and it later emerged that Shankar was not Ukrainian, but had forged passports in order to join the team. It was therefore suprising when he appeared as the Norwegian Hockey goalkeeper 4 years later in Athens
