The best without the best

I was going to make this thread a while ago, and forgot.

So, it's quite easy to pick a "Best XI", with most people picking from a very small pool of players, who are considered greats.

But what about if you weren't allowed to pick these players, what would people's teams look like now, and would they differ more?

So, I've complied a list of 111 greats. This was done, in general, under the following criteria:

Bastmen: Average of over 50 in at least 20 games.
Bowlers: Average of under 27 having taken at least 100 wickets.
Keepers and additional players: Picked by looking at Cricinfo's All-time XI's.

So, the list, in alphabetical order for ease of searching, is as follows.

Code:
Abbas
Adcock
Akram
Ambrose
Ames
Anwar
Asif
Atapattu
Bishop
Barnes
Barrington
Bedser
Benaud

So, yes the basic idea is to see how good a team you can make without using any of these players.

One quick pointer: I haven't got first names on the list, in most cases it should be obvious who they are. If the name is listed twice, it should be because there are two. (e.g. Viv and Barry Richards).

Apologies if I haven't got a player who I should do on here, I tried my best.

Fire away!

How does Barry Richards make it to your list? He only played 4 Tests.

EDIT : OK, so you said in general, not a hard and fast rule. Must learn to read more attentively.

The main reason for putting him specifically in was I saw someone pick him in an all-time XI once, and so I thought, if there were 110 other choices removed, he might become rahter frequent in the teams.

Okay, so it's a discussion of underrated players? Interesting.

Not sure where I'd start on an all time list myself. One name that I can think of would be Stan McCabe.

Someone call in fertang - this thread needs him.

No point making another team now I guess. Good effort indeed!

Nice team, vcs.

A few more names would be Frank Tyson, Andrew Stoddart, Bishan Bedi and John Snow.

I'm sure you could come up with many more teams on similar lines, mine mainly consists of players I've seen + some obvious ones like Dujon, Larwood, and Roberts. Would love to hear more about players from earlier generations like McCabe, Trumper etc.

EDIT : Oops, weeman27bob's included Trumper in there. So not him then.

Aravinda also, many still consider him to be the best batsman SL has produced even after Mahela and Sanga.
