Much to PEWS disgust I would have kept him at 6 for a bit longer and thrown anyone in there at 3.

Certainly helped for Chris Cairns. Plenty of stories from his Notts days of him turning up so hungover that he couldn't be bothered running between the wickets, so he just sat in his crease and smashed it, usually very effectively.

I sent an email to NZC yesterday asking if there were any A tours planned in the next few months, they replied with this today.

We do have a team going a T20 tournament in Malaysia as well as the Emerging Players tournament in Brisbane . It may well be that one of these teams will be called NZ A but it wont be a tour in the style of previous tours undertaken by these teams . We do recognise the importance ands value of these tours but in difficult financial times decisions have to be made and priorities sorted .

In effect the Emerging Players are the next group of International players and in the Brisbane tournament they are playing a high quality of cricket given the strength of the opposition teams .

I enjoy it when NZC shoots itself in the foot by not letting our up and coming best and brightest play the up and coming best and brightest from other countries.

I much prefer sending them to play a bunch of 20 year old Australians with a handful of FC games between them, before jumping on a plane for some hit and giggle in a country that sucks at cricket.

Daniel Flynn, Brad Wilson, BJ Watling, Graeme Aldridge and Trent Boult have all been named in this year's New Zealand A programme. Starting in July it includes a 20/20 tournament in Malaysia, a training camp in Queensland's Maroochydore before the Emerging Players tournament which will be held in Brisbane in August.

No idea when the official squad will be announced but Todd Astle is another who will be in the full squad while Kieran Noema-Barnett pending fitness will take part in the 20/20 tournament.

I find seeing Wheeler and Wilson there a bit surprising. I knew Wheeler in particular was considered a good prospect, but I thought they were a bit further away from being ready. The others are all fair enough, IMO.

Sensible squad, though I don't we'll learn too much about Todd Astle form a handful of T20's and List A's. Be particularly interesting to see how Boult goes. While he's probably still a fair way off a test call up, if he impresses in the one dayers here he may start to put pressure on the likes of Bennett and McKay.

Is Corey Anderson starting to emerge into the higher levels or is he still too young? Was impressed by the pace that he was able to generate for a 16-year old.

Ryder has to me the markings of a great player in that he appears to have so much time to play the ball. Changes in pace don't seem to deceive him like they do the lesser players. I loved watching Sharma try to mix it up and get hit for 6.

Williamson reminds me of Fleming a bit, very neat technique.

It's hard to ignore a twenty five year old keeper that averages 42 in first class i guess. I haven't seen much of him but he's obviously a long term option if Reece Young fails to make an impact for the black caps. I'm more interested in Daniel Flynn, Neil Broom and Dean Brownlie. There's probably some uncertainty about Franklin at number six in the test team so if one of them have a good tour they could find themselves in the end of year squads.

I assume Martin is picked as the experienced spinner over Jeets, and Astle as the up-and-comer over Beard. If Vettori was to break down during the summer, the selectors may want to choose an experienced spinner to replace, rather than Astle / Beard. I am assuming Woodcock isn't being regarded as a test spinner. Martin is only 31, so could fill the backup role to Vettori for 2-3 seasons or until Astle / Beard have gained more experience.

I assume de Boorder is the long term pick, I haven't seen him play but others have commented that his glove work is better than the others, and if he has another year in the runs he is the obvious #1 from 2013 onwards. Hard on Young and van Wyk but sometimes it works that way.
