    England's Greatest Ever XI

One of prizes we gave away for the World Cup Fantasy Cricket tournament was "English Cricket's Greatest Ever XI" as selected by Chris Cowdrey, Jack Bannister and Alec Stewart. An English guy won it as well which was good

Thought it was worthwhile of a thread. This was the team they came up with:

    Harmison.

No Hobbs and Sutcliffe, who constitute most people's All-Time Test opening pair, leave alone just England's? Hammond? Weird team.

since none of the 3 'aitches figure, though hutton certainly played a lot after the war, too.

but no compton? and willis over harmison, surely? aaaaaarrrrggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

    Harmison is just absurd.

Even if it is post-war, Hutton should be there, as should John Snow. Probably Gower too.

But then, why would it say "Greatest Ever" and omit the first 60 years, along with Hobbs, Hammond, WG, Sutcliffe, Larwood, Lohmann and Verity? How odd.

Of the more left-field selections, Tony Grieg isn't a bad call, always got the impression he's quite underrated due to being invloved in WSC, a South African and/or a bit of a dick.

any idea what the selection criteria were? apart from the inhalation, on the part of the selectors, of massive amounts of mary jane.

As this was a DVD I dare say that to an extent the selection was dictated by what footage the company had access to

Depends what they have the rights to - if its all 1956 and on, or even 58/59, then there would be nothing of Compton or Hutton, unless of course their criteria was people whose entire career was post WW2, in which case they would be ruled out anyway
