What will Kirsten do for South Africa?

Gary Kirsten has obviously been a massive success with India leaving them as the no.1 team in tests and ODI world champions.

He leaves for a South Africa team which in an interesting position with lots of potential which they don't seem able to fulfill. They were on the verge of becoming no.1 themselves a couple of years ago but have drifted sideways without achieving much in their last few series. They had a fantastic ODI team on paper in this world cup and choked in the knockout yet again. Will Kirsten be able to turn this around?

Just because he succeeded with India doesn't necessarily mean he will succeed with SA of course; perhaps they already have the things he brings to the table. Still he has the experience of coaching a team that has consistently won big games and that should be valuable to South Africa.

I was under the impression that Kirsten was SA's next coach but apparently those are just rumours. Change the question to: if Kirsten coaches SA what could he do for them?

International Coach
I doubt Kirsten would quit as the Indian coach just to coach the Saffers, he had made it pretty clear that he wanted to spend time with his family and along with that he felt he had given everything he had in him to this Indian team and therefore it was time for someone else to take over.

If anything likes of Andy Flower and Gary Kirsten have shown in recent times that a coach can have an immense impact on the performance of a team, but for some reason its a role that isn't given the amount of appreciation or notice that it deserves.

Yeah surely Kirsten and Flower are proof that the old school mentality of coaches are only good for doing throwdowns is rubbish now?

Would love it if he came to Australia and worked some of his magic on our team. Nielsen is just a YES man, too busy trying to be "one of the lads" rather than actually coach. I think he comprehensively lost the battle of wills with Ponting. We need a coach who can compete with the ego's of the players and not be intimidated by them.

Kirsten has been offered the job and is considering it. So it seems to be a pretty serious possibility.
South African media reported over the weekend that Kirsten and Stephen Fleming had rejected the opportunity to coach the side and that the favourite for the post was former Pakistani coach and current Cape Cobras coach, Richard Pybus.
