The future of Pakistan Cricket

So our WC is over.It was a great run TBF. Definitely the most enjoyable WC of my life from a Pakistani perspective.I was too young during 1992 so i don't have a lot of memories from that time,we reached the 1999 final but everyone expected us to be do that since we were in great form going into the tournament. Our performance this time was pleasantly surprising against the backdrop of spot fixing,no home matches, political turmoil in the country etc.

So,where do we go from there? Our performance in the WC kind of reminds me of Germany in the 2006 football WC.Went in as underdogs,no huge superstars in the side, the nation went into a frenzy following some great wins, and then they bowed out fighting.

Captaincy
In an ideal word,i would want Afridi to stay as captain.I hope that happens.Make Hafeez his deputy.

Batting and Wicketkeeping
Younis and Kamran should be given the boot permanently.I have my doubts over Razzaq's usefulness to the side too.He will go ballistic with the bat every now and then, but his bowling and fielding doesn't complement that and i'm not sure if it's worth having him in the side anymore.I think Misbah should go on for a year or two.In Test Matches atleast. Also,in order to replace Younis,i think Asad Ali should be given a shot as an ODI player. There is also Umar Amin. And then you also have Ahmed Shahzad who should given a few more opportunities to improve and prove himself. He's young and he can get better. So in a crux :

Younis OUT.Asad Ali IN.
Kamran OUT.Adnan Akmal IN.
Razzaq OUT.Umar Amin IN.

Bowling
With Shoaib out,Wahab will be a permanent fixture in the side for a while now.Junaid Khan can also be tested. All in all,the bowling department looks promising.I think the team should experiment with Gul-Wahab opening the bowling. It could prove to be very uself.Gul will obviously spearhead the attack now.I'm not convinced by Rehman, who seems to nothing more than a run containing measure.Kick him out,and put Ajmal in every game. The difference in class was obvious during the WC.Ajmal is 33,but he's a spinner and thus he would be able to play for another 4 years. He's comparatively young at the international arena,so his body has not taken a lot of strain. So in a crux :

Rehman OUT.Ajmal IN.
Shoaib OUT.Wahab IN.

Overall
I think the side could take various shapes in the future. The following players could well form a part of the team in the future :

Muhammad Hafeez
Ahmed Shahzad
Asad Shafique
Azhar Ali
Umar Akmal
Adnan Akmal (wk)
Shahid Afridi
Wahab Riaz
Umar Gul
Saeed Ajmal
Junaid Khan
Misbah Ul Haq
Umar Amin
Sarfraz Ahmed (wk)

Plus Pakistan has always had the knack of producing quality fast bowlers out of nowhere. We might some new talent unearthed. All in all, exciting times for Pakistan cricket IMO.We have a strong foundation right now, which needs to be utilized. If things go in the right direction,we could be serious title challengers in 2015.

You missed Fawad Alam & Hammad Azam. Fawad especially should be the future No. 3 since Misbah/Younis is about to retire.

Would be mighty pissed if he isn't. Has been scoring runs for fun in domestics and got dropped unfairly from test side. And still for some mysterious reason keeps getting picked in the t20 side.

What about the bigger issue - of Pakistan being able to play enough cricket?

I had a quick look and it seemed like they have a couple of Tests in the Windies but not much else.

How many confirmed series are there?

England are due to tour Pakistan this winter. I doubt it'll happen but the tour could be moved rather than postponed or cancelled.

Oh that one passed me by but, yes, it looks like 3 Tests and 5 ODIs in January and Feb. It has to happen really, would be fascinated to know what the contingencies are for alternative locations. Hopefully not featherbeds in the Middle-East.

Maybe someone else could host them. It would be nice if they could play in the US. There are a lot of Pakistanis in the US so plenty of support. It would also give the Americans a chance to see cricket and who knows, some might even enjoy it. ICC should definitely use this opportunity to spread cricket. If they do play in the US, I wonder what type of conditions we could get. Does anyone know what the conditions were with the Sri Lankan and NZ game in the US recently.

Also would the English fans want their team to play Pakistan or is Butt gate still a bit raw?

I think January and February in the States would mean needing to go further South and certainly rules out Canada unless they go indoors. Where are the Pakistan populations?

My first thought was for places like Kenya but really not sure of the facilities. A world tour of associate countires maybe? :)

As to the last point, I think English fans would relish a tour to Pakistan or some exotic alternative. I suspect that the problem would lie at an administrative level as the ECB feel they reached out last year and were let down.

What's really needed is for a sort of Marshall plan for Pakistani cricket with a commitment across the board to keep them playing cricket.

What about England vs Pakistan in the Caribbean or South Africa - logistics allowing. Wonder how the host countries supporters would react to that? Or Sri Lanka?

I think Bangaldesh would make a great alternative venue for the England series.Plenty of Pakistan support there,so it have a lot of the home team factor. But Australia are touring them soon,No?That would rule them out.

The Srilankans have always been great to us,so that could be a potential venue too.

I don't know much about the alternatives but I would have thought it would be worth giving Kakmal a shot as a specialist batsman. He is certainly a talented strokeplayer and if he concentrates on his batting he could be a decent ODI opener.

Big no. I just want Kakmal gone. He has caused enough problems in the team already. There are 3 certainties in life; death, taxes and Kakmal dropping something.

^ Misbah ul Haq is too slow for ODI's as proved yesterday, but i think even if he plays ODI's he should bat number 3, he is totally wasted at number 5, he is sort of batsmen who can anchor innings well but pakistan have totally missed used him at number 5, if he was batting at number 3 yesterday, the result would have been different

As for Younis Khan he is no good in Odi's anymore, but still in test matches he can be useful for atleast 1-2 years

I read something in the paper about Kamran and Shahzad getting dropped for the WI tour and getting replaced by Adnan and Imran Farhat respectively.

Adnan is a good move.I have doubts about Imran however. He's been given far too many chances to prove himself, but he has never quite taken them.

He never was. I got pelters from Pak fans (salman85) here for suggesting he shouldn't be apart of their WC campaign and what did Younis do? Absolutely nothing.

Just on PakPassion at the moment and here is a gem of a Younis Khan stat...

"In 23 games against Australia, averages 15.77 at a strikerate of 57
In 17 games against England, averages 28.86, strike rate of 71
In 22 games against NewZealand, averages 27, strike rate of 68
In 34 games against SouthAfrica, averages 26.48, strikerate of 67
In 16 games against West Indies, averages 28.80, strikerate of 66

LOL. Farhat's had more comebacks than Cher. Does Farhat's uncle still work for the PCB?

^ true i never liked him in ODI's, in tests though, he is really good, i think he doesn't even like playing ODI's himself.

Irony is Younis Khan is the most positive batsman in Pak's current test line-up by SR, no other batsman has a SR over 50 there. Just never cut it in ODIs or 20/20s.
