Who is the new captain?
Should McCullum continue to open? Should he even be made a 20/20 and test specialist?
Will Styris retire? Do we keep picking him if not?
Will Kyle Mills make the next world cup?
Is Nathan McCullum the man to take over from Vettori? Who should be his spin twin?
Will Oram retire? Do we keep picking him if not? Can he make the next world cup?
What should the batting order be?
The bowling order?
Do we pick with 2015 in mind or for the next game?
Anything else?

Discuss.

Taylor should definitely be captain imo.
I can never make up my mind over McCullum, but if Styris retires, I reckon Nicol probably deserves a go in the opening slot, perhaps with Williamson @ 5 and Baz @ 6 (ODIs). Dunno what to do with Franklin.
I don't think Oram will retire. If he and Mills are fit and firing, with no-one else demanding selection, they should be picked. We should pick our best team for each game, maybe throw in some newbies after a series is in the bag or against poo opposition (or injuries).

anything else...

Yeah, i think its time to give some new guys a shot. The likes of Oram, Styris and maybe even Mills will retire in the next twelve months or so. Kane Williamson for me showed us the talent he has which is pretty exciting to be honest.

Our bowling attack i think will really start to kick up a gear in talent in the next couple of years. We have Wagner, Milne, Boult and Southee likely to be our seamers and i think Vettori and Nathan McCullum should continue to be our spinners. Todd Astle might have the odd game in the next year or so just to what he has got.

The batting line up...hmm i don't know to be honest. Dean Brownlie has to get a shot at test level against Zimbabwe i think. There are others like Rob Nicol, Daniel Flynn that i would consider as well. I think age shouldn't be a factor in picking young players. Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson and Tim Southee are living proof that talent can survive on the top level.

Our bowling attack for the next few years:

Daniel Vettori
Neil Wagner
Tim Southee
Trent Boult
Adam Milne
Todd Astle
Nathan McCullum

Batsmen:
McCullum
Guptill
Williamson
Ryder
Taylor
Brownlie

Possibly some others like

Murdoch
Flynn
Weston
Nicol

Wicket Keepers. I think Reece Young is ok but to be honest. I want youth in there.

Derek De Border

Captain:
Ross Taylor

People retired:
Oram
Styris
Martin
Arnel
Possibly Mills

BBC reporting that Vettori is thinking about retiring from ODIs. Already announced that he is finished with international 20/20. Be a huge blow to lose him from the ODI set-up and as NZ play about 3 tests a year, he will have a lot of free time to play here, there and everywhere in domestic 20/20 comps.

I'd enjoy seeing Vettori playing FC cricket and captaining the A team (when not playing tests obv.). He's going to be dangerous in FC with bat and ball and he'd make a good A team captain, along with ensuring the young players have a safety net with bat and ball.

He shouldn't retire really. I mean a spin bowling all rounder should last until the 35-37 year old range and as you say we really play **** all test cricket anyway. He could play exclusively at home for ODIs or pick and choose when he plays a bit like Tendulkar does. That would be a better option than him retiring. Surely, players would want to play in the next world cup which we play at home?

Knee-jerk to retire in ODIs (unless he actually doesn't enjoy it obviously). Still has plenty to offer, even if not as captain.

It'll certainly be interesting to see how he stacks up against the other spinners in the Plunket shield. He's been playing full time cricket for so long, that he's barely played anything besides the odd domestic ODI. It would be ITSTL if he only averages 40 and gets outbowled by the likes of Astle, Beard, Nethula, Jeets etc.

First things first, NZC need to do everything within their power to secure the services of Allan Donald for at least the next 2 years. I've already heard rumours that there are difficulties involving Donald's family (who are living in SA) and other competitors for his services. With the next gen of young quicks on the very immediate horizon, we simply must have a top quality bowling coach in place.

Reckon Styris will hang round for a while yet. He's got an IPL contract and he'll want to keep his T20 skills sharp. Oram I think will keep playing until he next injures himself. Millsy should be able to tough it out for one more world cup. There's no reason why a bowler of his style shouldn't still be effective at 35.

McCullum should drop down the order, and Nicol should be given a run. NcCullum still doesn't have me 100% sold on his bowling, but I don't see anything obviously better, so it'll do.

Take a modest approach to new selections. If we rush in 4 or 5 players at once, the team will crash and those players will wilt. I'd say try picking one or maybe two new players a season. Next year it'll probably be Trent Boult and Rob Nicol, with maybe Adam Milne getting a shot the year after that if he gets fit and performs in the domestic comp.

From what I've seen of Nicol (so like three games, not much), I'm not overly convinced. Appears very front foot oriented, strike rate of about 70 domestically and while he's good at the sweep shot, I got the impression it was his main mode of runs against spin.

It has to be said that none of those would necessarily be career killers, especially with our current team.

Wagner, Milne, Boult, Southee, Bennett are all pretty young. That is the next 5 years of New Zealand fast bowlers.

McCullum has done his dash opening - even if he had've scored 30 runs in that semi final forget a century that might have resulted in the game turning out differently. Drop him to six. His dismissal was attrocious (Athlai to help on spelling) Agree that Nicol can have a run at opening.

Nathan McCullum has been good with bat and ball - not terrific - just good. So he is a keeper. Reckon Nick Beard should be next cab off the ranks to come into the side. He was quite consistent in the List A stuff this year if I recall correctly

Batting Order
Nicol
Guptil
Williamson
Ryder
Taylor
McCullum
McCullum
Oram
Vettori
Mills
Southee

Reckon Williamson would do better at 3 - And Ryder and Taylor can shuffle down one spot.

Pick with the next game in mind for now - we need to build some confidence in the blackcaps rather than picking for 2015. Apparently the number of youngsters playing cricket has been dropping off because the blackcaps are failing. We need to win and do well.

Anything Else - I have a hunch that Nick Beard will be a good performer at International level - I think he gets better loop that Woodcock - and although he will not be as good as Vettori. Will be better than Jeets.

I think we need to do whatever it takes to keep Vettori playing cricket. If he wants to quit ODIs until the next world cup then so be it. I also think we should make McCullum vice captain again to keep him happy and motivated. We have such a shallow talent pool that basically we should be hiring topless models to serve them beer after each game to prevent key players from retiring. We need to give them preferential treatment. Preferential training regimes. Anything. New Zealand should aim to keep players to 37 or 38. We lost too many at 32.

Yay. I just typed out a massive response to this thread only to accidently clink on a link and lose it all :@

Basically though as long as Brendon McCullum moves down the order I'll be happy, he's proven during this world cup and the last two years beforehand he probably isn't the best option up top.

Oh, and if we can get away with not picking 30+ year old journeyman who have never really cracked it at the international level then I'll be even happier

Beard had an econ rate of 4.4 this year. he did very well. did not take many wickets mind, reckon he should get a run in a 20 20 game.

McCullum is still the best keeper in the country. No need to replace him with McGlashan.

(Assuming you are talking about ODI's)

Yeah, despite all my championing of McCullum as an opener, I still would love us to find a decent opener to allow him to move somewhere else. That's if he continues to fail, of course.

Two series against Zimbabwe - and then finally SA in March of next year...how is the team suppossed to grow if they are not playing this year against top opposition.

I hope we blood some new players against Zimbabwe. In my heart of hearts I wish they had not regained test status. I hope they surprise me with their competitiveness.

The standard Blackcaps fare really. All the same negatives as usual. Batsmen failing to rotate the strike, batsmen failing to capitalize on starts. Death batting (minus Akhtar giving Taylor his birthday presents in delivery form) was pretty ave.

Bowling was alright, Southee showing good development, Oram showing he's still got it. Fairly threatening ODI attack at full strength, but obviously NZ genetics will never allow that to happen.
