*Official* South Africa in Pakistan Thread

Mr. P

International Vice-Captain
South Africa have hit rather unfortunate circumstances. From a very good situation, they've gone to 170-odd/4. Kallis went to kaneria for 29, and mackenzie for a duck. But Kirsten was felled by a sharp ball by Shoaib that hit him just below his eye. Boucher and Dippenaar are now at the crease.

Lunch Day one. South Africa are 145/2. Kallis has 27* and Kirsten has 46*. Gibbs and Smith weren't brilliant, but South Africa seem to have the upper hand. Sami and Kaneria have one wicket each.
145/2 at lunch on the 1st day is insane!

Get well soon Gary Kirsten.
Can someone who had the opportunity to watch today's play please explain how Shoaib Malik managed to get the figures he did? More economical than anyone else AND more wickets.

Nice to see Danish back, but Mushtaq continues his rollercoaster in the international wilderness.
When was the last time he actually bowled like he can in a Test-match?

Gotchya

State Vice-Captain
Pakistan played well to clear their debts, Kamal looks like a very compact batsman...who knows!

Paul Adams struggling to spin the ball, wonder why.

Poor old Kamal. Still, you ask any batsman whether he'd prefer 99 or a duck...
It seems he's waited his time, nice to see someone get their due and take advantage of it.
Paul Adams appears to have bowled well.
Looks like Ntini and Pollock have been exposed as blunt in these conditions. Nel bowled OK, but he likewise doesn't possess much of a cutting-edge.
I assume the pitch is the traditional Gaddafi belter?

Don't know, but it's his first Test for 2 and a half years!

Flintoff has similar problems.

If Gibbs accelarates and the rest of South Africa support him, this match may just have a result.
gibbs accelerated but not for long, i respect Gary Kirsten for his 46, despite being injured, and I also agree on Zohaib about sami, he had Gibbs caught behind on 13 but Moin Dropped it! talk about nervous timing..but akhtar ripped through the top order for Danish Kaneria (Pakistan's new great leg spinner..might be able to compete against warne!) to rip through the tail...the tail were out in just 13 runs..and musshy got his first wicket back..

Did Sami have Gibbs dropped off a good delivery? If not, he wasn't unlucky to have it dropped.
Flintoff has had a few drops in the last year, very few off decent deliveries. If the batsmen hadn't played poor strokes he wouldn't have had the opportunity to have catches dropped. And given that he deserves no credit for a poor stroke...
Playing-and-missing, remember, is but a short-term problem for a truly good bowler. He of stature will eventually hit the edge. He of less stature will continue to extract the play-and-miss.

What if a bowler delibratly bowls a bad ball.

You see it quite often a bowler bowl's a string off good balls and has the batsman playing really tentitivly then they throw a wide half volly sucker ball and the batsman goes for it and does not get it properly because he is to tentitive or trys to hit it to hard.

The good old wide half volly can be a very effective ball if used at the right time.
