How times have changed.....

Just doing some revision on Richard Hadlee's career, for the 25 vids i'm uploading tomorrow on youtube. Noticed a crazy thing, that on the 1990 NZ tour to England, there were 2 odi's and 3 tests, and FOURTEEN tour matches. Thats amazing. Could you believe that happening anymore??? 5 international games, 14 lead up games, staggering. How times have changed. I remember the 85 and 89 and 93 tours to England being really long for the Aussie team, played almost ALL the counties. Now you'd be lucky to play 2 of them. Insane.

It has come to such a pathetic state where there is not even a single practise game for a high profile no.1 takes on no.2 series, India in South Africa. Disgraceful really. Also one test and two test series which seems to be vogue with New Zealand and the like are adding nothing.

I was skimming through the book of the 1902 tour of the Australians.

They played 36 matches or something like that in total.

How many players were used?

14.

These were almost all at least 3 days matches, btw.

That's the fault of the 2 boards though.

Travelling was not easy and comfortable 100 years ago hence those long tours.

It's an issue of $ too. In the days before massive sponsorships/retainers, to get paid, you had to play matches. Going over and just playing 6 Tests + 3 ODI's in England wouldn't pay enough to survive. International TV audiences mean boards and players make exponentially more money going from tour-to-tour and playing more international cricket, tour matches don't make as much because they're not widely televised.

True. FC records of pre-television era players should be given a lot of weight. Stating the obvious, but Hobbs's 200 FC centuries means a lot more than the 100 FC centuries by Ramprakash or Hick.
