Vanuatu, Japan register wins on day one

Vanuatu and Japan have got their ICC EAP Under 19 Cricket Trophy campaigns off to winning starts accounting for Indonesia and Fiji respectively at the Maroochydore Cricket Club on Sunday.

Vanuatu cemented their place as one of the favourites for a top two finish defeating Indonesia by 8 wickets in a solid hit out for the boys from the Pacific.

"I think we bowled well in the conditions today," said Vanuatu captain Patrick Matautaava. "The ball was swinging quite a lot today and we used this well to our advantage."

Vanuatu made light work of an Indonesian side that had only arrived in the country less than 24 hours before by dismissing them for just 72 runs in a rain interrupted first innings.

The wickets were shared by the Vanuatu strike force with Jelany Chilia, Jaxies Samuel and Patrick Matautaava each picking up three in a terrific display of bowling. For Indonesia Muhaddis and Gaurav Tiwari offered some resistance with the bat each making 18.

Vanuatu passed the total with eight wickets in hand although faced some solid bowling from the young Indonesian team who could have been well in the game had it not been for a few dropped catches. Kendy Kenneth top scored for Vanuatu with 30 off 39 balls and was well supported by Callum Blake who chipped in with a composed 20.

Japan made a terrific start to the tournament by defeating Fiji by 24 runs in a match that saw the momentum frequently swing throughout the contest. In the end Japan’s discipline with both the ball and in the field was enough to get them over the line.

"We really attacked well in the field today," said Japan captain Raheel Kano. "I think that was probably what won us the game."

Japan cautiously saw out ITS 50 overs to finish with a score of 9-138 thanks to some patient batting from Takumi Nomura who top scored with 34. For Fiji Noa Acawei was outstanding with the ball finishing with figures of 5-29 off his 10 overs.

In reply, Japan applied terrific pressure throughout the innings denying Fiji any opportunity to put together an extended partnership. Only Toko Bogidrau (29) and Josefa Gauna (20) kept Fiji in the contest until man off the match Raheel Kano cleaned up the tail in quick succession to have Fiji all out for 114.

DAY 2

PNG and Vanuatu have confirmed their status as favourites to finish in the top two with clinical performances on day two of the ICC East-Asia Pacific Under 19 Cricket Trophy at the Maroochydore Cricket Club on Monday.

PNG were relentless with the ball and in the field bowling Fiji out for just 63 in the overcast conditions. PNG then chased down the total with the loss of only one wicket in 11.1 overs.

"It was a good win for us and with no final at this tournament we have to ensure we continue to build a strong net run rate to ensure top spot," said PNG team manager Raymond Haoda Snr.

Sese Bau was exceptional with the ball taking the wickets of four Fiji top order batsmen and clean bowling three of them on his way to figures of 4-13 from eight overs. He was well supported by Toua Tom who took the key wicket of Toko Bogidrau and picked up man of the match with figures of 3-16 off 9.2.

In its reply PNG was never really challenged with Lega Siaka being the only player dismissed when he was caught off the bowling of Tukana Tavo for 19. Rogeauka Roge and Chris Kent comfortably batted out the rest of the innings to pass Fiji's score in just the 12th over.

Vanuatu stamped its authority as the main challenger to PNG by beating Japan by 228 runs in the most impressive performance at the tournament to date.

Set 251 to win from 50 overs Japan was bowled out for a mere 23 thanks to a sensational opening spell from man of the match Jaxies Samuel who took 6-3 off his 10 overs.

"It was a good result for us today and gives us a real chance of booking a spot on the plane to Ireland," said Vanuatu coach Mark Coles. "However we can't afford to relax now with two huge games to come against Fiji and PNG."

Vanuatu had a number of contributors with the bat and looked to push singles and twos throughout an innings that included only 12 boundries. Ronald Tari top scored with 36 and Patrick Matautaava and Callum Blake both added 35. For Japan Tsuyoshi Takada took 3-55.

However the day belonged to Samuel who along with fellow spinner Jelany Chilia were thrown the new ball in a desperate attempt to get through 20 overs as quickly as possible with rain a possibility. It proved a tactical masterstroke as the pair had Japan 7-6 after 19 overs before Matautaava and Sala came on and cleaned up the tail.

Brief scores:

At Maroochydore Cricket Club: Fiji 63-10, 33.2 overs (T Vakarau 12; S Bau 4-13, K Morea 3-13, T Tom 3-16) lost to PNG 66-1, 11.1 overs (C Kent 19 not out, L Siaka 19); PNG won by 9 wickets

At Maroochydore Cricket Club: Vanuatu 251 all out, 43.1 overs (R Tari 36, C Blake 35, P Matautaava 35; T Takada 3-55) beat Japan 23 all out, 27.4 overs (T Nomura 13; J Samuel 6-3, S Sala 2-10); Vanuatu won by 228 runs

PNG, Vanuatu remain undefeated

PNG and Vanuatu both claimed comfortable victories on day 3 of the ICC East-Asia Pacific Under 19 Cricket Trophy in Maroochydore to all but ensure a top two finish and qualification to the next tournament in Ireland.

PNG continued their form from yesterday against Fiji by bowling Indonesia out for 61 and passing their score with the loss of only one wicket in 11.1 overs.

Toua Tom bowled a brilliant opening spell of opening bowling taking 5-16 to leave Indonesia in trouble at 5-7 after seven overs. Tom who picked up man of the match was virtually unplayable as he ripped through the Indonesian top order.

"I am pretty happy with the way I am bowling at the moment," said Tom after the match. "It's nice to take some wickets and help the team."

A solid knock of 23 from Gema Pramanda turned what could have been an embarrassing loss into a brave performance from the young Indonesian side that pushed their score up to 61.

"We certainly have room for improvement," said Indonesia captain Rizky Rubbi. "But our boys haven't experienced playing on turf wickets or dealing with bowlers who swing the ball both ways so it was always going to be tough."

In reply Indonesia had PNG in early trouble taking the key wicket of Lega Siaka who was trapped leg-before wicket without scoring off the bowling of Gaurav Tiwari. From this point on however it was business as usual for PNG as Chris Kent (29) and Rogeauka Roge (28) guided their side to a comfortable victory.

It was not all smooth sailing for Vanuatu in their match against Fiji despite posting a strong total of 244. Some tight bowling from Tukana Tavo (2-47) and Josefa Gauna (3-55) provided Vanuatu with some nervous moments as they sunk to 4-30 after 10 overs.

However some big middle order hitting from Kendy Kenneth (42) and Patrick Matautaava (28) as well as a composed 43 from Nalin Nipiko guided Vanuatu to 244.

"Today was really good with both the bat and ball, I'm happy with the performance today," said Vanuatu captain Matautaava.

With rain on the way Vanuatu once again opened with spin from both ends to try and force a result. As it had previously against Japan, this worked to their advantage with Jelany Chilia picking up three wickets in his opening spell to leave Fiji at 3-46 after 22 overs.

At the completion of 22 overs rain forced the players from the field with Vanuatu comfortably ahead on Duckworth-Lewis. When players returned the revised target for Fiji was 215 from 40 overs which was always going to be a difficult task.

The task was made virtually impossible when Matautaava re-opened proceedings with a double wicket maiden including the crucial breakthrough of Fiji captin Tavo who was trapped LBW without scoring.

From here on Vanuatu cruised to victory bowling Fiji out for 81 in 38.3 overs with Matautaava finishing with figures of 5-7 to set up an enticing fixture with PNG on Friday that will likely determine the winner of the tournament.

"It will be a hard match but we are determined to win," said Matautaava. "To give ourselves a chance our first priority will be to bat out 50 overs."

Brief scores:

At Maroochydore Cricket Club: Indonesia 61-10, 32 overs (G Pramanda 23; T Tom 5-16) lost to PNG 64-1, 11.1 overs (C Kent 29 not out, R Roge 28 not out; G Tiwari 1-17); Result: PNG won by 9 wickets

At Maroochydore Cricket Club: Vanuatu 244 all out, 48.2 overs (revised to 215 off 40 overs) (N Nipiko 43 not out, K Kenneth 42; J Gauna 3-55) beat Fiji 81 all out, 38.3 overs (M Daucakacaka 25; P Matautaava 5-7, J Chilia 3-18);
Result: Vanuatu won by 134 runs

I didn't think PNG had qualified yet. The ICC website shows them with 2 wins from 2 (with a very healthy NRR) but they still need to play 2 more games. It is possible for Japan to finish 3 wins, 1 loss.

Of course, what you have said is the likely result, but let's wait and see, huh?

You are right Juro, but with EAP tournament, PNG are through :)

Looks like Bermuda weren't a threat after all.

The world cup qualifier in July should be a cracker. Just having seen the results of the Asia, Americas and EAP tournaments, the strongest teams all made it through pretty easily. Obviously the level of competition will be a lot stronger in Ireland...

The final 10 have been decided. As Juro said the tournament will be a cracker of a tournament. Lets hope best 6 qualify and even defeat the test nations. If teams like Nepal or PNG qualify and reach the top 4 that would be a dream tournament
