Very good team. The bowling lineup of McGrath, Steyn, Muralitharan, Warne and Kallis looks undisputable.

will go with my instincts and ignore the spreadsheets for a change

for the team from 2001 to 2010, the first player i would choose will be adam gilchrist. in an era of high caliber wk-batters like flower, sangakara, dhoni, stewart, boucher and haddin he stood out big time with his umcomplicated stroke making and supreme wicket keeping skills.

my opening bowler would be mcgrath. he was, again, miles ahead of the rest of the world in his accuracy and work ethic and intelligence.

similarly murali won so many matches on his own and so did warne. it is not necessary to drop either of them. both walk into my team.

the middle order champions are too many. but ponting would be my first pick. because he is a natural no.3, dravid is unlucky to miss out.

at 4 would be jacques kallis. he is only one level below tendulkar but on par with pietersen, mahila and mohammad yousuff. with two spinners in my team i would need him to be my fifth bowler if necessary. he walks in to the team on his all round abilities.

the openers would have to be hayden and sehwag. there were other terrific new ball killers like smith, langer and jayasuriya who played a lot in this decade but these two are the ones the opposition hated to see come out of the dressing room swinging their arms like prize fighters.

that leaves me with two more middle order positions and one opening bowler.

to partner mcgrath i have to choose one between shan pollock, dale steyn and shoab akhthar for they were the most likely bowlers to match pigeon on his legendary match winning quality. i go for steyn for he was faster than pollock and struck more quickly than anyone else. he was also more accurate than akhthar and did not have genital warts.

one of the middle order slots i would want to hand out to brian lara. he will come in at no 5 and kill the opposition with his magic.

no.6 is a specialist position. and laxman takes it despite heavy opposition from chanderpal, hussey and samaraweera.

so here is my team

hayden
sehwag
ponting (c)
kallis
lara
laxman
gilchrist (wk)
warne
steyn
murali
mcgrath

Tendulkar averages more than Ponting, Sehwag, Hayden and Dravid in this period. However, he averages less than Mohammad Yousuf and Mahela Jayawardene too.
He averages more because your weird definition of a decade happens to include this year, where he's been awesome.

And I couldn't give a **** whether or not he averages more than Dravid. Dravid has been India's best batsman of the last 10 years, end of story.

The thread is asking people to pick based on 2001 to 2010 . I.e the last 10 years.

Do not know what is so tough to grasp here? And why people want to exclude 2010 and include 2000?
