Sachin says no to liquor brand endorsement, turns down $22 million

Sachin turns down $4.4 million/year on the principle that he will not endorse a product that will harm youngsters.

MUMBAI: The great Sachin Tendulkar, idol of many youngsters and cricket freaks, had once again chosen principles over money by saying ‘no’ to endorse a liquor ad. As per the reports, Tendulkar refused a whopping Rs. 20 crore-offer to endorse a top liquor brand.

Sachin, who is admired by everyone when he is on the field, is also loved by his fans for his moral conduct. Following his middle class roots and traditional values, the master blaster refused to promote liquor or cigarettes.

However, the brand has not left any stone unturned to get the nod of Sachin for the deal by offering a whopping amount of Rs 20 crore a year to become its ambassador. But there is no information on which brand approached Sachin for the liquor endorsement.

Sources revealed, “He (Sachin) has decided not to endorse products that are harmful to one’s health ever and has stayed away from them. This time, however, the lure was too high. Yet, he said no to the offer.

A former player close to Tendulkar revealed that he is living up to the promise he made to his father. “His father had advised him against endorsing alcohol-related or tobacco products soon after he had made the Indian Test team. Anyways, money can never lure Tendulkar and this offer is a classic example of how he believes in his principles and values his cricket,” he said.

According to the experts of the commercial endorsement business, if Sachin agreed to the deal, it would have been the highest-ever deal for an Indian sportsperson.

Recently, Indian Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has signed a Rs. 26 Crore deal for three years with liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s UB group. The offer which was made to Sachin, was much higher than what Dhoni has inked. Refusing such a huge amount proves Tendulkar is person of great value and principles.

Stunning that a cricketer can afford to knock back a $22 million endorsement. How far the game has come.

Good on him and all, but I would imagine it's pretty easy to make 'moral' decisions like that when your already filthy rich...

Shouldn't be held against him....no matter how rich you are 22 million is a big amount.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

Do the Ads and donate the money to a worthy charity.

Eh? It's not being held against him - it's a good thing to do - but at the same time, it's like so what? The vast majority of people would turn down such a request if they had the money Tendulkar has.

Moral decisions to do with money are relative - if you are extremely rich, then you should have a duty to be more generous with your use of money than someone who is poor. That's why people like Steve Jobs piss me off so much. He is filthy rich, yet apparently hardly gives any of his money to charity.

Yes, and along the way cause more harm to society by having more alcoholics in society :p

In fact do the ad and donate the money to an alcohol and drug abuse rehab :)

Whatever it takes!!!
ROFL at the guys claiming he is turning this down because he is already rich.. How many of you are aware that he turned down endorsing Director's Special and Wills when he was just about 18 or 19?? They sponsored all test and ODI cricket in India for a 5 year period and he was the first guy they went to with an offer that ran into millions of dollars (20 years ago, that is an even bigger sum that $22 M is today).. It is one thing to knock a guy for a real flaw but this just reeks of "lets find something to blame him with..."

On the topic, it is nice but not really a surprise. The guy had the maturity and the guts to turn down a multi-mullion dollar contract at a time when they were not even heard of as it went against the principles of himself and his father. He is simply being consistent, just like he is on the field. :)

It's beside the point. The fact he is does have an excessive amount of money now, so any decision like this he makes, while commendable, is hardly that extraordinary - I think you'd find the vast majority of people if they were in his situation would have done exactly the same thing. If it was any other player than Tendulkar, I doubt this thread would even exist. Don't see where you are getting the "blame Tendular" vibe from either, should more be a "good on him, but who really cares" vibe.
