Michael Clarke's captaincy

Maybe but if you need a bit of a freak wicket, I'd back Johnson in more so than Smith even notwithstanding Clarke's just announced back complaint.

There's not really a way to escape that Siddle and Johnson bowled plenty of stuff in their half to tail-enders on the mow. Were bowling for the top-edge, out, see ya Charlie but didn't get it then didn't know what else to do. Considering they were his only specialist bowlers, I reckon he deserves a bit of lattitude. He certainly didn't lose Australia the game, the batting did.
Agree 100%. Smith could have (and probably would have) been smashed even more severly if he was used. Then people would be saying, why wasn't Johnson used more?

The people at fault are the same people in Mohali. The bowlers. Johnson especially has now failed twice and contributed signifcantly to the loss of 2 matches. His inconsistancy suddenly becomes very noticable when pressure is on to win the match.

Plus, as you said, the batting to begin with was frankly ****. Even Hussey who kept the innings together should have been able to score more and put us in a more comfortable position. We also missed Ponting a lot...

Clarke as a captain has little to do with this loss imo.

There wasn't any bull**** towing of the line in Clarke's interview (that I could hear, I had long taken a nap and was still groggy)

Now I'm sure Clarke didn't ask Siddle and Johnson to bowl like a bunch of Muppets. Clarke and his captaincy is just one factor in an overall fantastic game of cricket.

I'm not a fan of Clarke as captain, I mentioned this last night in a thread. But he doesn't deserve to have the blame placed solely on him for tonight’s performance.

Clarke was only the third best captain on the team today and he made (IMO anyway) a few significant errors but he's not terrible. I've actually been pretty impressed with his T20 captaincy - don't know what to really take from that though.

This loss can't significantly be attributed to the captaincey of Clarke when two bowlers bowled like brain dead monkeys

Thought that the worst move was pulling off Doherty during the powerplay. Three out in the powerplay, put two out straight and one out at deep forward square, and ask Malinga to hit across the line. Once Doherty (or a spinner) was back on, guys had their eye in and were raring to go. The guy was hot, had taken four in his first game, let him keep going.

I'm getting sick of Johnson too. His value as a bowling all-rounder has completely diminished as well. I really hope some domestic guys like Copeland or Cameron can get a go in the national side at some stage soon. I think Johnson needs some time away from international matches to improve his game.

He's always been an average OD player IMO. I'd have him 'rested' from the remaining two ODIs and get him into some FC matches before the Ashes

For sure. Could not imagine the universe if we have a shocker in the 1st test and Mitch bowls pies. Not sure we have the team that can come back to win. Hell at the momenth we have a team that can win very much at all. :disgust:

Johnson has done pretty well in ODIs to be fair. He's been far more economical than guys like Siddle and Bollinger (against decent teams).

think the wrong posts have been moved here.

clarke wasn't perfect, but, let's face it, even if he had captained perfectly, with the same set of bowlers barring himself (and i personally would prefer that he didn't), we still probably would've lost.

To be honest this has been terrible captaincy by Clarke. Not only did he take Doherty off early when he looked like finishing the game off, but he always kept the fielders near the boundary. Yes the balls were going towards the boundary but it doesn't create any pressure.

He put all the men in close on his last over, and a wicket fell straight away.

Dumb ass captaincy.

Renamed the thread so it didn't look like I was making an outlandish statement when I wasn't even the one to start the thread. Hope that's okay, Jack. :p

I sort of agree but if balls are going to the boundary, how does bringing the field up help?

Silly statement. The wicket was simply because it was 1 to win with the tie safe.

Because then the batsman have to be wary about not hitting the ball in the air. If everyone is near the boundary the tail ender can free himself and open up.

This is like Sydney all over again where MoYo let the game drift away. Clarke was just hoping they would make a mistake.

But they were forced to bring the field up - the PP - and got belted. Unless you're saying everyone should be up? Wow.

To compare this to Sydney is a massive insult to Clarke.

Yep.

Reminds me of the comment Ian Chappel made on Ponting's captaincy, when he has his back to the wall he turns to all out attack. Clarke only made that decision when SL needed 3 runs to win.
