Stars From a Young Age

The sudden rise and dramatic fall of Mohammed Amir all before the age of 20 has invoked my interest in the incredible achievements of some cricketers before they leave their teenage years. My teenage life involved spending hours in front of the Playstation, chasing the opposite *** and drunken escapades on the weekend. For some young men to be representing their country and matching it with the world’s best cricketers is truly a remarkable achievement.

So who do you consider to be the greatest teenage cricketer of all-time? Which teenage cricketer achieved the most remarkable feat? Which teenage cricketers showed so much during their early career only to end up mediocre at best?

Some examples to get things rolling.

- Shahid Afridi scoring the fastest ODI hundred at the age of 16
- Waqar Younis taking 55 Test wickets at an average of 19.49
- Narendra Hirwani and his 16 wickets on debut against the West Indies
- Graeme Pollock to score 2 centuries in 5 Tests against Australia all as a teenager
- Mohammad Ashraful and his Test century against Sri Lanka just a couple of months after turning 17
- Sachin Tendulkar and all his remarkable achievements as a teenager (1,522 Test runs with five 100's topping the list for me)
- Alok Kapali taking a Test hattrick at 19
- The fact that Hasan Raza made his Test debut at 14 years of age
- Javed Miandad and his stunning introduction to Test cricket
- Ishant Sharma and his over to Ricky Ponting (and subsequent decline as a bowler)

Brian Close had an incredible career in terms of years. To think he made his debut just one season after Bradman retired and then Close played his last Test match in the same period that Viv Richards was announcing himself as the world’s greatest batsman.
