NZA Team named

State Vice-Captain
Bit of a yawn this team.

New Zealand A: Brent Arnel, Michael Bates, Neil Broom, Colin de Grandhomme, Brendon Diamanti, Daniel Flynn, Peter Ingram, Tim McIntosh, Rob Nciol, Aaron Redmond, Shanan Stewart, Neil Wagner, Luke Woodcock, Reece Young.

Could mean Young is close to the wicket keeping role.

I like to see Bates and Arnel in there but where is Watling? Can't see Woodcock getting in the team despite his stellar last season, plays a role that the team isn't really looking for.

Ah wait Watling is with the ODI squad - nevermind that.

So those are the best of the rest going round? Anyone else you'd put in there for the experience?

Williamson but hes in the ODI squad, Boult might still be carrying an injury. Corey Anderson? Did he injure himself as well?

No one else really springs to mind. Cumming and maybe even Brodie would be my backup picks for Test openers. As for middle order stuff that seems the best of the rest besides Fulton and Sinclair.

Ah, it all makes sense now. New Zealand cricket being as cheap as it is decides why wastes thousands of dollars sending an A team over to England when we can just rip of an Emerging players tournament and send them there instead.

Indian like move this, I don't like at all.

Howsie's right, this team is playing in the Emerging Player's tournament and the teams there have normally been young up-and-comers, not a full blown A team.
Last year we sent the likes of Worker, Raval, Kitchen, Bennett, Beard and Davis.

Since they cancelled this year's A tour to England without reason, it does look like they want to save a bit of cash.

Yeah, didn't realise players could play for NZ A before they're NZ-eligible.
Edit: I see the NZC website refers to the team as NZ A, but Wagner played at this tournament last year when they played as 'NZ Emerging Players'.

It was more of a reaction to it being an "Indian move". Emerging players are usually young up and comers but they're primarily blokes who haven't established themselves on the international scene. Considering the average age of the Indian Test team is well in its 30s its no surprise they have older players still pottering around at the lower national levels. If you don't reward these players with a tour then you can lose them. I think McIntosh is fine to be in there as he'll probably captain. The rest ARE all up and comers in the national perspective. Pinga being the only iffy selection IMO.

He said that cause last year India sent their A team dressed as 'Emerging Players' too

My point is India's A team are their emerging players. New spinners and old batsman etc. etc.
The level of their emerging-ness comes into play though.
This tournament in the past has been for players who have just announced themselves on the FC or List A scene or have strung together a few decent domestic seasons and haven't been on a load of A tours prior.
Our team this year is in stark contrast, being loaded with players who have internationals under their belt, a number of A tours and half-a-doz domestic seasons.

Last year's team, only two players had played an international, Southee and Fulton. (Fulton, Nethula and Young were the old farts in terms of age)
Fulton was there almost as a specialist captain and an old hand to guide them.
In this new squad, nine of them have played an international and are old farts in terms of both age and domestic experience.

NZC are welcome to send essentially a 2nd XI, what I'm saying is the tournament has not normally consisted of teams at that level in the past.

At the same time theres is no point sending an U19 team over there. They have to actually be 'emerging' players with the hope of a future cap. Brodie and arguably Astle are the only young blokes who really struck me as making any impact besides these guys and the actual blackcaps last season.

Which I just couldn't understand at the time. Surely sending over younger players (18-21 year olds) who have done well for the under 19 team or have started well in their respective domestic careers would make much more sense considering the teams they were coming up against.

I'm not sure on the exact number of A tours India goes on but iirc it isn't much?

Since 2008 we've been sending over "emerging" teams with a lot more experience, 2006 iirc there wasn't a single player with international experience besides Fulton.

What I just don't like about this at all is that not one young promising player has been picked up to tour, it's just a straight up A tour. If New Zealand cricket weren't being so stingy we could have had this team in England at the moment and had the likes of Josh Brodie, Corey Anderson, Trent Boult etc playing in this against players with very similar FC experience.

Interesting that all of Brodie, Anderson and Boult were carrying injuries to the end of our season though.

Agree with Howsie here on cost cutting. Need to have both sides out there.

Imo NZ A and emerging players should be very different teams. NZ A should be our genuine second XI, and the emerging players should be just so.

The named side has a second XI look to it.

Imo the side that takes the field should be (bearing in mind this is limited overs)

Pinga Ingram
Rob Nicol
Aaron Redmond
Neil Broom
Shanan Stewart
Colin de Grandhomme
Reece Young (w)
Brendon Diamanti
Neil Wagner
Michael Bates
Brent Arnel

Josh Brodie, Jeet Raval, Andrew de Boorder, Brad Wilson, Anaru Kitchen, Doug Bracewell, Corey Anderson, Adam Milne, Nick Beard, Trent Boult, Ili Tugaga.

11 players right there that performed last season that could/should have been in this team.

Kitchen is quite old IIRC.
