Original poster says it's in India mate. Ashes this summer here, and they wouldn't waste India in Cairns and Darwin for a Top End series, surely.

BCCI requests CA to replace four ODIS with two Tests

MELBOURNE: Desperate to play more Tests, the Indian cricket board has requested Cricket Australia (CA) to replace its scheduled seven one-day matches in India in October with two Tests and three one-dayers.

CA said they had received an official request from the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) in India and were considering it.

"We've got an open mind on it but it's being discussed and that could be the road down which we will go," a CA spokesman was quoted as saying by The Australian.

"One of the thoughts going through our heads is that we've got an Ashes series coming up and all we've got between now and then is two Tests against Pakistan in England during July. Playing Tests in India in October may not be a bad idea because it gives us another chance to have another reasonably contemporary Test experience under the belt," he said.

This summer's five-Test Ashes series in Australia begins in late November. So the Test players would have plenty of time to readjust to Australian conditions by playing one or two Sheffield Shield matches after the series in India.

CA claims it has no indication why India wants to change the schedule and will not speculate. However, there is no doubt that India becoming the leading Test nation is central to the BCCI's motivation.

India played just six Tests last year and the four it has completed this year are all that are scheduled until after next year's World Cup in March.

Playing so few Tests leaves India vulnerable of losing the top ranking with the top of the Test table so tightly packed. India is on 124 points, South Africa on 120 and Australia on 119.

India is only the third team after Australia and South Africa to go atop the ladder since the Test Championship was introduced in May 2001. Australia has been number one for most of that time.

There were some pretty average bits during Australia's last tour there. At least with Haury in the team, we shouldn't see Cam White being wheeled out as a frontline bowler, or Ponting opting for Hussey to bowl instead of a proper bowler. Reckon our current pace attack of Johnson, Bollinger, Harris, Watson will do a fair bit better than the 08 version did.
Reckon the tour of India was our low point tbh.

TBH the more I think about it, I would've been happy enough if they'd just suggested 3 ODIs instead of the ridiculous 7 without even mentioning Tests, so am very glad. Surprised they're not trying to squeeze at least one T20 in there though.

Considering Cricket Australia had no issues with a two test series touring NZ early this year or hosting SL in 07, both of which were under FTP, would be rich of them to insist on 3 tests for this one which is solely at BCCI's initiative and not under any ICC requirement.

I can't see why they can't consider this as an extension of last series. The core players are more or less the same. With Australia, they've only been better without over the hill Hayden, in form Watson, Hauritz a proper spinner, blossomed Johnson, etc. Besides, it's another opp for Ponting to better his performance in India. I wish by clubbing this to the 08 series they set a welcome precedent, and we'd have a 6 test series after so many years. :)

Was only suggesting it as that might get us a three test series. Obviously a two test series would be better than no series, or a seven-ODI series.

Should also give a fairly good idea of how much the Aussies have really improved over the last year or so, particularly the bowlers. With all due respect to Pakistan, West Indies and NZ, they don't exactly present the greatest test for opposition bowling lineups with the kind of batting lineups they possess.

Will help that guys like Bollinger, Harris, Watson, have had experience playing in India through the IPL. Tests are obviously different, but it will at least be somewhat familiar territory.

Bollinger's always been good in India. See various practice matches and A tours to confirm. Made his exclusion last time around all the more baffling.
