Was Ratnayake the dude who used to wear the head-band? If so, he was fairly rapid
He was the man. But there were two Ratnayake's, both wore it. One was shorter and slingy, other was accurate and taller. Rumesh is the one you are referring to.

Surely Shoaib's Pakistan's quickest ever, topped 160kms on a couple of occasions IIRC
He only hit Lara on the head. Zahid was even quicker. He was beating young Lara all ends up for pace in that particular B & H match. Mohammed Akram also was very quick. Have seen beating him de Silva for pace on slow low Pakistani tracks. Any bowler even in their peaks could not beat de Silva for pace with the short ball, and this included Ambrose, Imran, Waqar, Wasim, Donald, Schultz, Shoaib and Lee. Bur Mohammed Akram did it. And he even split the thigh pad of Chandika Haturusinghe in that match. He also got ruined with injuries.

Richardon was hit by de Mel. Rumesh broke Andrew Jones' nose and fainted after seeing blood!

And the Alamank's report says referring to Ratnayake, "though after the match aspersions were cast on Ratnayake's action." I am not sure how a slinger could throw it at that pace!

And incidentally Steve Randall has been umpiring the game.!

I still remember watching Ratnayake at Hobart taking 6/66 against the Aussies. Bowled wonderfully well that day. What a gun, the exact opposite could be said of Umpire Randall. 8-)

Fred Trueman & Keith Miller also deserve a mention.

Tyson was supposed to be superhumanly fast and could make people bleed through their pads according to reports, IMO he was probably the fastest the world has ever seen, slightly faster than Akthar/Thommo methinks. Though I have no way to prove his speed, 145 is underselling Tyson, I reckon.

David Frith believes Larwood is easily the fastest of all time and states he was recorded at 96mph in his book 'The Fast Men' though he doesn't any proof of where and when the speed was recorded and it's credibility. Honestly, with no disrespect to Larwood, I think Frith lost a lot of his credibility about writing on Fast Bowling when he said "Marshall was great, Garner and Ambrose just had long limbs"

For England Trueman,Tyson and Larwood are all talked about as being very quick but we will never know just how quick as the speedgun wasn't about.

In recent times Malcolm,Flintoff,Harmison,Jones,Mahmood and Lawrence are the fastest i have seen with Tudor just below them.
