No, I wouldn't have thought so. I'm a bit of a football purist though, I have little interest in the end of the Premiership season now that my own team's finish place has been more or less decided. But a World Cup is just something else, I can't really describe how. I think that beyond the commercialism (comparatively limited at the World Cup as compared to many other major sports events) there is something quite pure about world-class sportsmen playing for non-monetary reasons and because of who their team represents. Strangely I find it hard to conciliate my generally internationalist stance with the patriotism that a World Cup involves. There's also the history - certain moments in World Cup history are the defining moments of the game's history. And the fact that it is the one sports event (other than the Olympics, which is essentially all sports and doesn't move the passions in the same way) which more or less the whole globe gets fussed about sits it well above the Ashes for me, which essentially is a two-horse race.

That's not to say that I'm not excited about the Ashes, as stated earlier.

Those are mere ramblings though, I think given a bit more time and thought I could state my case far better.
This! The football WC may not produce technically as high a standard of football as some of the best club sides in the Champions League, but there is no bigger stage. It is where legends are created.

TBF it's nearly 50/50 on the client/good guy count IMHO.

Barry, Rob Green, Milner & Email all seem sound of the likely starters and Feo is an absolute sweetheart by all accounts.
I've got this mental image of big Emile being called in to be knighted by the Queen and falling over his own feet before he gets to her.

Ashes. Although I'm looking forward to the WC more than normal, especially with the better timezone for watching.

Ashes. I thought one-day games were finished?

Even so, the last 2 were utterly predictable.

Don't leave me hangin. I want yer defamatory goss.
Haha, nothing defamatory. I don't mind Rooney as far as fat scouse mancs go but there's plenty to dislike him for. Try:

-Cheating on his missus with elderly prostitutes (well, something like that)
-****ting on Everton - once a blue, always a blue, until I change my mind
-Goading and swearing at blue****e fans on his first couple of returns to Goodison - suck it up hey
-Selling his story to The Sun - he's from Liverpool, FFS
-Calling his kid Kai

TBF I reckon he's easily the most widely-liked United player amongst Englishmen in recent memory.
Scholes?

Beckham a shout as well, that's offset by how much he was once hated but whilst still at United he was easily the most well-liked England player (think 2001-02).

World Cup for me.

Have to say I'm looking forward to the one after this one more, though. I'll get to as many games as I possibly can when we have the tournament in Australia and NZ in 2015, no matter who's playing. It'll be awesome.

From my experience, Beckham was nowhere near as universally liked as Rooney is when he was at United. Especially after the whole Argentina thing. British footy fans LOVE enthusiasm. When a striker sprints 80 yards to win the ball back from a soft Italian playmaker with a crunching borderline-illegal tackle, they cream.

Also, your listed misdemeanors are all from quite a long time ago. There's a widespread perception that he's matured- he's definitely not as petulant on the pitch as he once was. I don't know if he has or not, but a lot of people seem to feel that he has.

Scholes is a decent shout though. Especially where you are. Rooney has the disadvantage of being hated by both teams in Merseyside.

:p

Rooney's barely tolerated at best round my way. Don't know any non-Man U fans who actively like him. There's a recognition he's England's one genuine world class player, but that's as far as it goes.

I don't know how could one compare the 2.

I mean enough is enough. Ashes has 2 teams playing tests! It is quality cricket for sure but how could that be above the WC?? I don't know but this is insane.

2007 may have been long and ****, but to say it was predictable is false. Australia were in poor form leading in, and SA were favourites or close to it.

The semi final should have been awesome, but SA did their second biggest choke in history.

I'm sorry but there's no way that's even close to true. As I said, Beckham was hated in 98. But after his Greece 2001 heroics he was the cream of the nation. The height of Rooney's popularity in this country thus far was Euro 04, at which point he wasn't a United player.
