Your Cricket Season 2010

Well, I don't know about other CWers but my cricket season started yesterday so I thought I'd make this thread so that if there are any others of you out there whose season has also started, we can chat about it and what not.

On a personal level we lost by 147 runs. We lost the toss and were asked to bowl first. They made 332/4 after 48 overs. I took 1/64 from 9 overs. Their number 3 made 213*, though he was dropped 8 times. 3 of which were off my bowling. At one point I had figures of 1/33 from 7, then the captain decided it'd be wise to switch my ends which then resulted in me being hit for 31 from my next two overs. It wasn't particularly easy bowling up the slope, against the wind and with a leg side boundary that was approximately 40something yards.

Yes, the boundary really was that small. The match was played on the club's U11's pitch, on the same ground but on the strip nearest that boundary, the rest of the boundary is then marked by cones apparently. Anyway, it was a farce.

What grinds my cricket gears is when you set your field and ask fielder A to go out on the rope and fielder B to stand by the bench and then what follows is a series of one bounce fours over fielder A's head and the ball cannoning into the bench. I'm not bitter, misfields happen off every bowler. I'll deal with it.

Batting was a shambles, I came in at number 7 and finished with a little 13* to see us to an extra batting point.

There's my rant, hope your first/second/third/fiftieth games of the season went a little better.

Indeed it was.
The bloke that hit it, Simon Cole, had his own little line in the Cornish League's 2010 handbook for his 2009 performances where he hit 6 half centuries in 13 innings with a HS of 95*.
Then he does this on the first weekend of the 2010 season

Division 4 East Cornwall, we're really not fit for the league. We nearly folded the club as we just don't have the members. We struggle for 11 each and every week and will probably have specialist fielders batting at 8 at some point this season. I strongly considered leaving but due to a few issues with transport and the fact I have exams coming up I thought I'd stick with them, not to mention that the club needs every player it can get.
If it carries on I'll reasses my options, I know that I have a few options. Either in Plymouth or Division 2.

Sounds like U10 fielding to me. I shall look to use this thread to bore you with the progress of my sides, as I won't be playing too much myself. The enthusiasm of the boys for the start of the season at the moment is fantastic - some of them have been in the nets for 6-8 hours over the course of this weekend. We start on Wednesday v Bilton Grange, and then the day after we're off to Rugby for a six-a-side tournament.

I still have 101 questions about team balance and batting order that are left unanswered...

How about this one from a guy playing in my league:

Yoxford CC - Play-Cricket - Yoxford CC - 1st XI vs Elveden CC - 1st XI

I've never played against him personally, but he's supposed to be one heck of a player. Yoxford's a pretty small ground, and it's generally a pretty flat pitch, but even so, 342* in a 45 over game is just unreal. He followed that innings up with a 239* in a friendly; made 303* the season before that and made another double century in '03.

Would put money on all of its boundaries being larger than the shortest one yesterday. Was a farce.
Though that is an incredible effort, regardless of opposition and pitch size.

Just had an outstanding afternoon's cricket between two of my sides - the Oxfordshire U10s and the North Oxfordshire U11s (the level below County, but a year older). For most of these boys, it was their first experience of playing 40-over cricket, and my pregame hope was that the game went the distance and produced a close finish at the end.

The County boys batted first by arrangement, and the opening pair got us off to a 58-run start, before a steady flow of wickets throughout the innings stymied any opportunity of real momentum. The skipper batted through all 40 overs for an outstanding 80 not out, but the third-highest score was only 10: a symptom of too many half-shots or non-shots, when there was a great deal to be said for backing yourself on a slow track, and trusting your technique to hit the ball hard. I'd have taken 177/8 at the start of the game, but at tea I was left wondering if we mightn't have got a few more.

After 11 overs of the District reply, with the scoreboard reading 68/1, I was thinking that we really should have got a few more. Backing themselves to hit the ball over the top, hard and - most pleasingly - straight, the #2 and #3 raced along at a run a ball before perishing in quick succession. I was particularly pleased for the opener who made 20, having never scored a run before this season: tribute to hard work (and, I hope, to good coaching). A clatter of wickets soon followed, however, and at 77/5 it looked like game: but not according to the #5. Taking advantage of some naive field settings, he hit confidently over the top on both sides of the wicket to go to a maiden fifty off just 28 balls. At drinks, with 16 overs to play, it was 124/5 and game on.

Following a rather pointed team talk at drinks, the County began to get their heads around field placing, in-out fields, boundary riders and different fields for different batsmen - as well as telling the captain to "be nasty" and take control of the game - the runs dried up, and then wickets came: 143/8, with a lad at the crease whose top score was 2. The key word here is "was", as he proceeded to crack the ball around the ground with superb timing and no little technique, as he raced to 26*, cutting the target to five from four overs... before being bowled as he tried to work the first ball of the 37th over to leg. There was a life in there, admittedly, as the keeper dropped a very, very simple skier who was subsequently both inconsolable and, despite this, then didn't miss another bye). The 37th over finished as a maiden - as did the next two - and suddenly it was five from the last over. Two over cover to the sweeper, dot, dot, one - and two to get with the last man on strike. Dot. Middle Stump. 176 all out.

Just like I wanted: a game that went the distance and produced a close finish at the end. Couldn't be prouder of all 26 boys involved: and feeling very good - if rather exhausted - about my coaching right now.

Lost by 1 run, bowled 5 overs for 44. Yes, that's right, 5 overs for 44.
Not sure why bowling an offspinner into the wind, turning it up the slope and towards the short legside boundary made sense to the captain, especially when I spoke to him at drinks about it.
Granted I didn't bowl well but cheers for giving me every opportunity.

Got bowled for 2 by a ball that pitched hall way down as well, ****ing hate early season pitches.

You do wonder why he's playing at that standard though - a village Sunday league. It might be nice to watch, but I'd feel a little aggrieved if I was playing on either side.

Is your club going through a wicket keeping crisis or have you some experience at keeping?

I tried keeping for a match once when our 3 usual keepers were all unavailable and it was less than successful, the only saving grace being that I was so out of shape that the ball would hit my substantial 'middle area' when missing the gloves!

Well it will actually be our 3rd keeper in 3 games but really we only have 1 keeper, who has been unavailable and will remain so until June.
We generally just make do, we have a couple of guys who have kept over the years but depending on who is available we might need one of our part time keepers to play as a bowler.

I kept for about 7 games for the Sunday side last year, really enjoyed it. I'm a goalkepper in football and there is some crossover in skills. Should be alright
